XS508M sometimes two LEDs remains permanently yellow

dear all,

my case in short:

since 1 year now i am facing a problem with one of my Varta Battery Storage connection.

The connection and traffic on the switch is working after the two led's are blinking. Something seems to change the connectivity or better there is no traffic anymore. Then I am not able to connect to the Battery Storage consol direct via the IP or the name. The IP is stored as fix in the router. This is always happening overnight or early morning hours.

The interesting thing is that my battery solution consists of two battery storage units and a Varta Link, which monitors the connections and controls the storage units. its always only the second varta storage connection making the issue.

my Infrastructure:

The Switch is connected 10G SFP+ Port to the core switch XS512EM. The Core Switch XS512EM is connected with the Router witch is working as DHCP Server. I am running 10GB NAS of QNAP on this infrastructure incl. Surveillance Cameras connected to the NAS via the core Switch. Also in the network infrastructure the typical PCs, IP consoles and SmartHome technology is connected.

my resolution:

After I disconnect the cable on the switch (XS508M) and wait for a while, the connection is again active and the lights are blinking again yellow/amber (=>100 mbit).

Last time (3 weeks ago) it was the same but I was not able to reconnect with the same cable,.... so I changed the cable (CAT5e to CAT6a) and it worked again. Also I changed the port. I use now the port of the first Varta Storage.... but this was probably not the problem I guess :-)

Two years ago this issue started (every week the connection was lost) and I thought that this was caused by my old 16 port GBit switch. So I changed the setup and bought these new setup to ensure that this will not happen again. Also I forced Varta to change the Network Modul inside the storage (complete new inverter I got).....

Any Idea what issue could trigger this behaviour?

Is this isue comming from wrong cable or setup is wrong I need to connect the Varta Environment by a cheep Switch and connect the via one cale to the 10GBIT infrastructure?

Hope someone can give me an idea...

  • let me understand what you did:

you connected your ATV via GS110MX 10Gb Ethernet to the XS505M SFP 10Gb port

and the XS505M is connected via Ethernet port to your Router RBRE960

So I guess the 10G of your router is used as WAN.

My router is a Fritz Box 7590 and the WAN is direct connected to internet fiber box and Port 4 1G connnection goes to the core switch XS512.

The core Switch XS512 is connected with the XS508 via fiber connection 10G. This connection is done via 2 Moduls Netgear AXM761 and Digitus DK-2533-01-04 LC to LC 1m. This was the most recomended connection to my 10G infrastucture.

All rooms are connected via 10G Ethernet to the Core Switch. I use for all 6 rooms GS110EMX (TV and Office) or MX for all other rooms. My Surveillance Cameras are also connected via GS110MX to the core switch XS512.

On the XS508 I have following connections:

    • Port 1-3 only the three Varta connections (Varta1, Varta2 and VartaLink)
    • Port 4 my NAS QNAP677 (10G) and
    • Port 5-6 the Backup NAS QNAP 882 10g and 1G Backup connection
    • Port 7 free and 8 Ethernet is free (8 coupled with SFP)
    • SFP connected to SFP of Core switch

On the Core Switch XS512 following is cionnected:

    • Port 1-6 connected to rooms (port 4 => direct connected to Router 1G)
    • Port 7 SMA1 Photovoltaik
    • Port 8 SMA2 Photovoltaik
    • Port 9 SolarEdge Photovoltaik
    • Port 10 is my 1G Backup connection to NAS QNAP 677
    • Port 11 Surveilance connection (external cameras)
    • Port 12 free as coupled with SFP
    • SFP connected to SFP XS508 switch

I did not think about trafic ar segmentation, because I did not want to complicate anything. Should I boundle the NAS connections on the CORE Switch and the Smart connections to the XS508? This is the only one could disturb by data transfer to NAS (see Surveilance over night)....

The only thing I could imagine is that one of both two disturbs however the connection

So is there something I can optimize to avoid any interference due to NAS or Surveilance or IP-TV?

But I dont think the trafic is so high for my 10G environment.... before of that the Surveilance worked via Wifi connection and it was ok. BUt who knows!

CAT5e can be used for some higher speeds however it's not really recommended. CAT6A STP cabling is recommended for 2.5 up to 10Gb connection speeds. I tend to keep CAT5e for 1Gb and lower. I personally don't use 5e any more unless for temporary or teting needs. CAT6 UTP for 1Gb speeds and CAT6A STP for all speeds higher than 1Gb.

An odd issue I ran into with my XS505M after installing it years ago, Apple TV would crash the LAN network system for unknown reasons. Turns out how I had the XS505M connected between the router and the SFP port was the cause.

    Summary:

    RBRE960 2.5Gb port > XS505M SFP > XS505M Ethernet 10Gb port > GS110MX Ethernet 10Gb port < ATV fails

    RBRE960 2.5Gb port > XS505M Ethernet port > XS505M SFP 10Gb port > GS110MX 10Gb Ethernet port < ATV works

After connecting the 2ndary downstream switch to the XS SFP port, have had zero issues since.

Hopefully this was just a cabling issue.
