Home Account should be Business

Does anybody know how to contact Netgear when you have an admin problem (not tech support). For several years I have emailed different people (sales, support etc) asking why my account is setup as a Home account when it should be a Business Account. I never get a reply.

That means that every invoice that I get from Netgear Ireland has VAT on it which I cannot reclaim because it is an Irish VAT number. It should be dealt with under the reverse charge procedure and have no VAT added.

So far I cannot find and point of contact to deal with mundane issues such as this but it is costing me money every time I have to renew a support contract and it stops me buying anything direct from Netgear. I am about to spend a few thousand pounds on new Wireless Access Points and I'm seriously thinking of using a different product.

Thanks for any help.

  • The correct procedure for a B2B transaction from any EU country (including Ireland) to any country outside the EU (including UK) is something called the Reverse Charge Procedure. That means that no VAT is charged on the invoice and the invoice must state that the Reverse Charge Procedure applies to the invoice. I am certain that this is correct because it is the way that Google  (based in Ireland) charge for Google Workspace, and I know a lot about VAT.

If the customer is not a business then that is different. Having a UK VAT number is proof that you are a business which applies to us.

As far as I can make out Netgear have 2 classes of account, Personal and Business so that they can make the charge correctly but we are classed as Personal for some bizarre reason. There is nothing on the Netgear website which provides a contact point for this type of problem. Support will not handle it (I tried) and Sales have no idea about it and don't even bother to reply to requests for help.

Basically Netgear are paying VAT to the Irish Government which they do not need to do, what an incompetent shambles.

    • Are you a registered VAT business in the EU? VAT reclaim is (in my understanding of the EU VST laws, but I can be wrong) always possible, just apply for it on your local VAT portal.
    • For countries outside of the EU where the VAT paid in advance for Ireland is not refundable.

Sure, it would be much nicer for the customers if Netgear would charge exactly the VAT for the final delivery destination country, on behalf of the customers address and local VAT authority.
