WAX206 sticky 2.4ghz
I have recently purchased a WAX206 AP
Very disappointing device so far.
The biggest issue with it is that my phone is constantly connecting to the 2.4ghz channel and is never redirected to 5ghz.
Both share the same SSID but I dont understand why the phone never connects to the 5ghz channel.
I dont want to reduce the power on the 2.4ghz radio - as I have devices throughout the house that connect to it.
I dont want to split the SSIDs - the phone should switch between channels depending on distance from the AP.
Am I stuck with this suboptimal situation? Or is there something can be done to fix the sticky channel?

do all devices have issues or just this one?
Reason I ask is that its the phone itself that decides which band to roam to

Hi aposull ,
Enable or disable smart connect for the AP
Smart connect automatically selects the fastest WiFi band for a WiFi client device that
is connected to the AP. By default, smart connect is disabled. (During initial login, or
when you ran the Setup Wizard, you might have enabled smart connect.)
When smart connect is enabled, it applies to all WiFi networks on the AP. For each
individual WiFi network, the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands use the same WiFi network name
(SSID) and network key (WiFi password). That means that when you connect to a WiFi
network on the AP, you see only one SSID, which connects to both bands of the WiFi
network.Thanks,
Basavaraj

There is no such feature like a channel redirect on any wireless AP.

With smart connect enabled, the AP does distribute a list with all SSIDs and channels active. No magic involved, plain standard 802.11k and 802.11v.
Correct country settings in place or are you probably using an US/FCC model abroad? What mobile phone are we facing here? What channels is the WAX206 active on? Which WiFi Mode is configured for the 5 GHz Band?

Thanks all for the replies/suggestions.. the phone is a Samsung S21FE
The region on my device is set to Europe (correct in my case)
The wifi mode on the 5ghz channel is set to “Up to 2400 MBps (80MHz) (11ax, HT80, 1024-QAM)”
I have smart connect disabled but I will enable it and to see if it affects the band choice.
As an aside.. I have a WAX204 AP in a different location in the house (also with smart connect disabled) and it has never had this issue 😕
- schumakuGuru - Experienced UserWith smart connect disabled, you have the option to configure two different SSIDs, one for each band. This should make the difference visible easily.
Worst case, do a factory reset and reconfig from scratch. If the 5 Ghz band SSID still does not show up on different wireless clients, don't hesitate to get in touch with the Netgear support via Https://my.netgear.com/
