WAX610Y and WAC540 Bridged Network

I have a WAC540 that is working great, and it's connected hardwired.

There's a driveway gate controller that needs internet access, but no hardwired network available. So, I purchased a WAX610Y (since it's used outdoors), made the WAC540 the root, and WAX610Y the extender. I also used a PoE injector to power the WAX610Y. The WAX610Y also services outdoor clients.

Both connect and formed a bridge across a long driveway. Although it's only 50 feet away, the wireless strength reported "good" (one below "excellent") at -54 dBm. I connected a laptop to the other end of the CAT5e that is connected to this WAX610Y, and I was getting very poor internet speed, something like 5-10 mbps up/down where it's normally 600+ mbps. I reset everything, did firmware upgrade, etc., but I am still having connectivity issues. It's also disconnecting and reconnecting every so often.

Can you tell me if the WAX610Y supports extending the network across the driveway? This is how I have it:

Gate Keypad <-CAT5e-> PoE Injector <-CAT5e+PoE-> WAX610Y <-wireless-> WAC540

WAC540 <-> router <-> internet

Thanks for any advise for getting this to work properly.

    MIght bring the WAXY closer to the WAC unit. Try 30-40 feet.

    What channels are you using? Try 1 and 40 or 11 and 48.

    Try using the WAXY alone with out the WAC unit.

    Though CAT5e is good for most indoor invironments, you may re-consider something that is out door rated. CAT6A STP would be something look into.

  • Can't swap WAXY and WAC because WAXY is made for outdoors, and the WAC is inside, protected from weather. If I switch just the mode but not the physical location, I guess I could try that.

    Can't use WAXY alone without the WAC. I mean, the main reason buying a WAXY is to extend the network from WAC within a building to across a driveway outside. WAXY can't talk to the internet without being connected to WAC.

    I'll try switching channels. Currently, it automatically picks Channel 6 for 2.4GHz, Channel 36 for 5GHz, and Channel 149 for 5GHz High.

    The CAT5e goes through a buried PVC pipe, but, yes, about 10 feet toward WAXY is exposed to the elements. I can replace those, but they're new cable, so should be fine for now until I replace it with one that is suitable for outdoors.
