Wireless IP address switching
I want to install eight WAX630E access points (APs) in a large warehouse. All APs will be hardwired on Cat 6 back to a gigabit switch that has a 2.5 Gb uplinked to a cable modem connected to the inte...

On occasion they will move to another area in the warehouse and be closer to a different AP. Do they keep the original ip address or will the closer AP which provides better signal strength and throughput negotiate a new ip address via a 6E connection?
Is there a way to hand-off ip addresses to another AP for better connectivity, similar to cell phone/cell tower switching? Do I need a management system to accomplish this?
You will operate all the wireless and wireld system on the same VLAN, so the same network. Handover is almost seamless, (certainly as long as you use WPA2-PSK, for WPA3-AES some assistance is required, Netgear Insight is your partner!). Of course, no IP address change will happen, No DHCP activity does have to happen, as to much time consuming. It's like quickly disconnecting and reconnecting an Ethernet link.
Where I can't follow your intended plan is why you are for a single Gigabit Ethernet switch for the AP. Consider these APs are ble to provide (much!) more banwidth over the Wi-Fi. The aggregted wireless bandwidth of the WP630E is ways beyond of 20 Gb/s. If you think 2.5 GbE AP uplink i sufficient, look into the WBE710 (WBE71x) and some mtching 2.5 GbE PoE++ switch. If going to the top, look fir the WBE750 (WBE75x) and some 10 GbE PoE++ switches for this business Wi-Fi network.
In case you need inter-VLAN communication on the same AP, the WAP630E isn't capable for this.

Hello Kurt,
We're not using Insight. We have just installed three WAX630E APs spaced out in a building all connected via a switch to a cable modem router. Everything works OK, but once you connect one specific AP you stay connected to that one even if move and are now closer to a different one. Everything works OK but performance drops when roaming. Is there an easy solution for AP/cell switching?
Thank you

Quick answer :
Yes, when client roams on the same SSID-VLAN, it will keep the IPaddress.
If you use Insight, you can turn on 802.11KVR on the SSID, this will help clients roam faster to the nearest AP.
This is called network assisted roaming.
If you want use standalone AP and AP UI to configure.
you can still turn on 802.11K and V.

Also turn on higher data rates, this will
1) Reduce the active AP cellsize
2)Encourage the clients to roam faster to keep the higher datarates (speeds).

Hello,
I simlpy have three WAX630Es do I put the same SSID in all three? Can 802.11 k/v band steering work if I don't use VLANs? I don't have Insight. Is it required? If I just use three WAX630Es without 802.11k/v and Insight, will a client connect to one of the three APs and simply stay connected to that one even if they move closer to another one?
Thank you
