Backhaul poor out of nowhere

I have a 3 satellite (one router) setup. all 3 satellites are more than 30 ft from the router. The setup has been working fine up until about a week ago and now one of my satellites is getting only getting around 130mbps as to where before it was consistently getting 300+

I've rebooted, my firmware is up to date on all devices, I've swapped satellites around, the satellite is connected directly to the router (not daisy chained) just like it has always been, I've done a factory reset, I've tried changing the channels (went from 48 to 40) - nothing has gotten me above 130mbps. I'm at a total loss on what to try next or why this has all of a sudden become a problem for one satellite (and the rest are fine)

I've got a RBR750 and I can't imagine it needs to be replaced already as I've only had this setup for a couple years (but maybe I'm wrong).

Any thoughts or ideas on why the bottom would just drop out of a connection like this?

  • The router and satellites are on firmware 7.2.7.15, correct?

One of the three satellites consistently measures slower speed, even when swapped with another satellite. So the problem appears to be with the satellite, not the location.

What device is being used to measure speed?

When testing, this device is reported to be connected to the satellite?

    Thanks

  • sorry  - a bit of clarity. When I switched satellites it didn't matter which satellite was in that room it was still reading the same speed. So I'm extremely confident it's the location.

Also - when I check for firmware updates it tells me I'm up to date but my router and 2 of my satellites are at 4.6.9.11 and the one that's not performing is at 6.3.8.5 so... not sure why 1. they're different and 2. why they aren't reflecting as the most recent version even though when I check for updates it tells me I'm good.

I've tested the speed off my phone as well as off a laptop (her work pc in her office)

both the phone and the pc are registering as being on that satellite. (however I don't know how to force the connection to a specific satellite even if I wanted to)

FW version on the RBR and RBS should be the same.

What model RBS do you have? RBS350s or 750s? There was a difference in kits that came the the 750 RBR. RBK750 came with RBS750s and RBK650 series had a RBR750 and RBS350s.

This is a common complaint about Orbi Firmware Update checks.  (and, nobody seems to know "Why?")

One recommendation is to start with the original package model number (such as RBK753 - "K" for "Kit"). Enter the model number in the Netgear Support web page:

https://www.netgear.com/support/, select it from the drop down menu, and then select Downloads.  This will (most of the time) display the most recent firmware release and a link to the download site for it.

This is an important point.  Netgear created an enormous problem when someone decided to create a "more affordable" package by bundling one RBR750 router with two RBS350 satellites.  The correct firmware for that package is different from a package consisting of one RBR750 router and some RBS750 satellites.

Oh dear. The compatibility list is a rat's nest.

The issue with RBS350/RBS750 satellites is really awkward.  For a long time, the RBS350 was compatible with the RBR750 router only when they were on specific firmware.  As of July 7, 2025 this appears to be still the case:

When an RBS350 is paired with an RBR350, they must both be on firmware 4.4.2.1

If the RBS350 is paired with an RBR750, then the RBR750 should be on firmware 7.2.7.15 and the RBS350 should be on 7.2.7.16

But if an RBR750 is paired with the RBS750, then the RBS750 needs to be on firmware 7.2.7.15

The key appears to be for customers to search for firmware by the package number (RBK652) rather than using the router model (RBR750) and satellite model (RBS350 or RBS750).
