Main unit is secured, but satellite is not

Hello.  Title pretty much says it all.  I noticed today that I have two SSIDs showing; they are both the same name, but one is secured and the other is not.  I saw a thread on here for a similar issue, and the marked fix was to do a firmware update.  So I went to the Orbi management site, and sure enough there was a new firmware available.  Easy fix, I assumed.  Alas, after updating the firmware to  V4.6.9.11_2.3.5 and rebooting, same problem.  I thought maybe it's a guest network, but nope, that is not enabled.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this?

It's an RBR750 with RBS750 satellite.  Thanks!

  • Where are you seeing this at? Provide a screen capture?

Did you update the RBS first then RBR lastly?

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since last update?

I first noticed it when I went to connect my phone to wifi:

I wasn't aware one can update them independently.  I just logged into the control panel, clicked Advanced then Administration then Firmware Update.  I only see RBR750 there, that's it.  The satellite is not listed.

No, I have not done the factory reset, that's a good idea.  I'll give that a whirl.

Yes, the iPhone definitely thinks there is a WiFi access point with that name that is "open":

I would attempt to diagnose this with a "WiFi Analyzer" application.  There are many available for Android phones/tablets and for Windows, such as WiFi Info View from Nirsoft.  These apps list each WiFi access point separately by hardware MAC address, so the "open" access point can be easily identified.

Sure, it's "Seireitei".  Security is WPA2-PSK [AES].

Can you post a screen capture of the RBS web page using a PC  and web browser connected to the RBS web page. This will show if the RBS is correctly secured to the RBR.

Please don't post passwords used on your system in public forums for security reasons. IF a moderator asks about a password, you can send them a private message.

  • Any progress on this?

    Hi Strahan201 ,

    Does RBS750 connect to RBR750 via wired or 2G or 5G ?

Can you check RBR750 and RBS750 security mode from web gui ?

    Thanks.

The RBS is connected via a cat-6 hardline to the network.  When I checked the security, I noticed when I logged into the RBS via the web the 5ghz is showing no security (see screenshot above).  I do not see though any way to change settings on that page so I went back to the RBR page but whilst I can find security settings, I don't see anything specific to the satellite or specific to 5 ghz.

Is the RBS connected directly to the back of the RBR or is there a LAN switch or patch panel in between them?

You may need to turn off the RBS. Then remove it from the RBRs web page. Then turn ON the RBS and when it starts to pulsate WHITE in front, press the sync button the RBS then on the RBR or use the RBRs Add Satellite function on the RBRs web page and get the RBS re-synced wirelessly. I would do this with the RBS near or in same room as the RBR. Check the RBS web page after the front turns BLUE to see that the security mode gets set to WPA2 for both radios.

If it doesn't at this point, you may need to factory reset the RBS and then try a re-sync again.
