Manual IP address assignment fails, DHCP does not??

Today I disabled IPv6 on my Netgear Orbi 960 router as a test, as the router was using more memory than normal - and it appeared that IPv6 was the culprit. I am testing that to see if memory usage stays where it should be for a few days/week. Anyway, as a result of disabling IPv6, I discovered a bizarre thing.

I had 4 devices that had a manual IP address configuration outside the dhcp range of 1-150, because they would flood the router with dhcp request messages - an old iPad, old iPhone, new iPhone and last year's Macbook. They have been using their manual IP address for probably 2 months. But once I disabled IPv6 and power cycled the router and satellites, none of them would connect to either the router or satellites even if right next to them! I do have 1 other Macbook that WiFi still worked with a manual IP address, so it was not every device (and I have 4 wired devices that had no problem). The 4 devices stayed on 5G cellular no matter what I did. I tried resetting network settings, power cycle, hard reset, nothing helped - except when I changed their setting to automatic ip address via DHCP, they connected immediately!

Ever heard of that - manual ip config fails but dhcp works?

  • When you set up Static IPs on these devices, are you also inputting DNS addresses as well? If so what DNS addresses are you using?

  • manual IP address as in the IP address is set on the device (what is often called a Static IP address), rather than being entered into the LAN Setup as an assignment based on MAC address?

Very odd that something would work for months and then quit working. Especially since IPv4 addressing has nothing in common with IPv6.  There were no static IPv6 addresses on those devices, correct?

I set the manual IP address on the device. They showed up in Attached Devices list on the RBR web page. I set them outside the DHCP range of the router, so it did not manage them at all. Very odd.

Would be interesting if these specific Apple devices updated software about this time.

        This is truly a mystery.
