Orbi 750, Could Not Get Good Ethernet Connection, Faulty Hardware??

We've been using a Netgear WNDR3700 wifi router with a Motorola SB6141 modem.  Comcast is our service provider, with download speeds of 100Mbps.  Our desktop is connected to the wifi router via ethernet.  We have one Netgear extender also.

We recently got the Orbi with a single satellite to upgrade signal strength.  Even after two very helpful calls to the support for Netgear, I just could get neither the ethernet connection nor the wifi to achieve more than about 5Mbps downloading.  It was very strange, for a brief couple of minutes it seemed to work then it slowed to a crawl.  Basically, the Orbi router would not work.  I'm not a tech person and never have had any special settings on anything, so I don't think I've got any special network defense settings that are making it hard for the Orbi.  I even tested the computer connected directly to the modem, and that gave me the speeds I normally have with the old router.  The connection speeds are good when the computer is connected directly to the modem; the speeds are good with the computer is connected via ethernet to the WNDR3700; the speeds are good when my iPhone is connected via wifi to the WNDR3700.  The speeds are unworkable when the Orbi is involved, whether or not it's a wifi or eithernet connection.  The problem definitely seems to be with the Orbi router itself, and not even with just the wifi setup but also with the Orbi's ethernet connection to the desktop.  So super strange it just would not work.

The tech fella with Netgear finally said the hardware must have a defect.  It'll be easy for us to return, and I just reconnected the older WNDR3700 and everything in the house is up and running fine, but dang I just did not expect there to be a hardware issue with a new $350 system.  I spent hours trying to get this thing up and running, so before I try again . . .

Questions:

  1. Anyone else have experience with purchasing an Orbi that had some sort of hardware defect?  Is a defect a real possibility?
  2. Can anyone confirm they've got the Orbi 750 working with an SB6141 modem and Comcast as the service provider?

  • What does the speed measurement in Orbi give you? Is it the same bad speed as you get when measuring the speed from the devices? Start with that to know if the speed degradation is from the interface between your devices and Orbi or from the interface from Orbi to the ISP?

Ok, I understand, but what does the speed measurement in the Orbi app or the Orbi web GUI gives you please?
