Orbi AX4200 WiFi 6 High-Performance Router (RBR750) -Firmware V7.2.6.21 router issues
Greetings,
I am having an issue when upgrading my system from FW version V4.6.14.3_2.3.12 to V7.2.6.21.
My configuration is the router is in AP mode, connected to a Verizon FiOS router, and the 2 RBS750's have a wired connection to the RBR750.
I received an email stating that a FW up was available
When attempting to do the FW upgrade using the desktop GUI I see that the Status box under the router and satellite status on the Advance/Firmware Update page indicates "No Internet"
I then downloaded the latest FW that I found for my configuration which is V7.2.6.21.
I successfully updated the 2 RBS750. (as can be verified in the screen capture above)
I updated the RBR750, and it was successful, however once the RBR750 rebooted with the new FWI experienced this:
- The RBR750 would go on and then offline. I started a ping from my PC and for about 60 seconds the ping had no packet loss, I was able to login to the RBR750 GUI, and I saw the RBR750 on my FiOS router GUI.
After about 60 seconds, the pings would be successful for 2 - pings, then go "unreachable", my GUI on the RBR750 would freeze/hang, and on the FiOS GUI I saw the RBR750 go from online to offline.
The RBR750 would then comeback online for 2 pings and then go unreachable again.
I also noticed that when the RBR750 GUI was up I saw 3 satellites instead of 2. When I tried to connect to this "new" third satellite, I was unsuccessful, I could not ping or attach via a web browser session.
After troubleshooting for about 2 hours, I decided to downgrade the FW on the RBR750 back to V4.6.14.3_2.3.12, and then everything returned to "normal". The pings stayed alive to the route, the RBR GUI stayed up and the FiOS router GUI showed the RBR750 online.
So my questions are:
- Why, when attempting to do the FW updated do I see "no internet" when all of my devices connected to the to the internet via the Orbi system and on the RBR750 GUI, the internet status is displayed as good?
- Is there an issue with the RBR750 FW version V7.2.6.21?
- Where did this ghost 3 satellite come from? (it had a different IP and MAC address then the other 2 RBS750's)
- Is there an issue with running different FW versions on the RBR750 and the RBs750's?
Any direction or suggestions would be appreciated, and if any additional information is required, please feel free to ask.
Best regards,
Frank

What browser did you use to apply the FW to the RBR after the RBS were updated?
Did you power OFF the RBR and RBS for 1 minute then back ON to see if the system returned to normal?
How is the RBR configured for AP mode? Dynamic or Static AP configuration? Possible that the Dynamic configuration was working then after a reboot the Verizon router change the IP address or something.
Something you might try, if you have the FW files on your wired PC, change the RBR to router mode and disconnect it from the Verizon router temporarily. Then reupdate the RBR back to v.21 FW using the RBR FW file. After the RBR is back to v.21, power it OFF then back ON. After it's ready, make sure your two RBS are connecting and fully synced. If you can get to this point, then configure the RBR back to AP mode and reconnect the RBR using it's yellow WAN port to connect to the Verizon routers LAN port.
I would set up the RBR as suggested in the attached PDF AP mode process for static IP address configuration.

Thanks for the response FURRYe38,
Since I can respond inline I will respond here:
What browser did you use to apply the FW to the RBR after the RBS were updated?
- FireFox running on a Windows PC running Windows 10 Pro
Did you power OFF the RBR and RBS for 1 minute then back ON to see if the system returned to normal?
- I did do this, I executed the FW upgrade on the RBS's, then RBR.
- After reading some articled online I then remove power from the RBR and RBS's, waited for 1+ minute, restored power to RBR, waited for 1+ minute, then restored power to the RBR's. I still had the connectivity issue for the RBR dropping pings and such.
How is the RBR configured for AP mode?
- AP mode
Dynamic or Static AP configuration?
Static, I assigned an IP address.
I did set to dynamic when I was having the ping/connection issue, thought that I might have a conflict, but no conflict was found on the FiOS GUI, so I went back and set the IP address of the router to
static.
I will try your suggestion about connecting the RBR and the RBS's to my PC, placing the RBR in router mode and then initiating the FW update on the RBR, and go through the power off and wait for sync until. Once complete I will place RBR back in AP mode and connect to FiOS router as you indicated. I will not be able to try this until later this evening or tomorrow morning. In any event, I will share the results.
On another note, should I now see an IOT network? Currently I do not see and IOT network on my RBR.
Thank you for your assistance and suggestions.

If after updating FW and back in to AP mode you see this connectivity issue, I would probably go for a full on factory reset that maybe needed here:

Where are you setting the Static IP address? On the Verizon router or on the RBR in AP mode itself?
What is the Static IP address your using?
Please review the attached Static AP mode configuration process. I use this when I put mine into AP mode.

I made a good detailed Manual FW update process document here:

After getting v7 loaded on the RBR, the separate IoT network will be available for use:
