Orbi mesh 6 RBR750 keeps dropping out

I have a large brick home about 300 m2. I have 3 orbi mesh units connected to NBN fibre , this mostly works OK but lately it has been malfunctioning, especially the rear 2 units. The house is long and narrow , I have the modem/router in the front , 13 meters away is satellite 2 and 10m further is satellite 3.

The 2 rear satellites constantly need rebooting now.

The main router also goes offline frequently ( maybe once per week) and needs rebooting also.

I have checked on the app and the firmware is up to date .

Any suggestions please?

  • Yes, a house of this size can be a challenge.

How does the Orbi web interface Attached Devices page describe the two satellite connections?

(see page 101 of the User Manual: https://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RBK852/RBK852_UM_EN.pdf )

Both "Good"?  One connected to the router and the second connected to the first satellite?

The Orbi 'app' does  not always indicate the most recent firmware.  For the 850 product, the most recent firmware is v7.2.6.31 https://www.netgear.com/support/product/rbr850/#download This is a bit awkward because the Community Forum contains a number of posts describing issues with this firmware and people seem to be reluctant to recommend updating to it.  There is less controversy over v7.2.6.21.  If a user wants to manually install a more recent firmware, it is important to update the satellites before updating the router.

What is the indication that the satellites need rebooting?

      Thanks for the reply.

      I have RBR750 ( not 850 - typo?) .

The firmware I am using is v7.2.6.31, is it possible to go back to .21?

The satellites need rebooting when there is no internet to the back area and I look at the app and it says the satellites are offline. Rebooting fixes the problem for a day.

      Cheers

        (Yes, typo - my bad)

When the satellites ARE working, how does the Attached Devices show their connection?

Good? Poor?  Each is connected to which specific Orbi unit?

Is there anything unusual about the building construction?

Yes, any software version can be installed manually on the system.  The key is to install on the satellites first, and do the router last.

Although there is a Manual Update Tab on the router interface that allows a person to update individual satellites (below the "line") and then update the router (above the "line"), my own preference is to connect directly to the IP address of each satellite and select the menu option "Firmware Update".  Probably just superstition.

Also the satellite backhaul connections were poor so I have moved thm and connected satellite 2 via ethernet. All seems to be going fine but on the internet site it is rating satellite 2 as poor. Is this connected to the ethernet ? is there anyway to check that ?

      Thanks in advance
