Orbi Router + Schlage Encode Smart Lock

Hi Everyone,

I have an Orbi AX5400 Tri-Band Wifi 6 Router (RBR760) and Schlage Encode smart locks on our home. The locks CONSTANTLY disconnect from Wifi and it is incredibly frustrating. I've tried everything related to the lock to troubleshoot, which leads me to belive it is the Orbi router causing the root of the problem. The locks run off 2.4 and I understand the router sends out both 2.4 and 5 signals and I think this is what may be causing the lock to go offline constantly. Has anyone else run into this issue? I'm to the point of getting rid of my Orbi and switching to something else.

Any help is appreciated!

Katie

  • What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended.
    How many RBS are deployed?
What is the size of your home? Sq Ft?

What is the distance between the router and 📡 satellite(s)? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR📡 and RBS🛰️ to begin with depending upon building materials when wired or wirelessly connected.

Does this happen with the RBS turned OFF?
Does this happen with both wireless and wired devices?
What channel configurations are currently set on the router?

What is the distance between this one device and the RBR and a RBS?

Might post about this in the Schlage support forums if this is the only device having problems with Orbi. Possible Schlage issue with Orbi.

      Hello!

      Here are some answers. 🙂

      - What Firmware version is currently loaded: On the lock or on the router?

      - What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?: Model E31N2V1 Hitron Docsis 3.1 Voice Internet Cable Modem (it's the one that came from Spectrum)

      - Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6 is recommended: I have whatever came with the modem. I'll have to check and see if it's a CAT6.

      - How many RBS are deployed: I'm assuming this means the Orbi Satellite, right? If so, just one Satellite.

      - What is the size of your home? Sq Ft: Roughly 1,000

      - What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBRand RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wired or wirelessly connected.: I'd say roughly 30' or so!

      - Does this happen with the RBS turned OFF? Not sure on this one. I'd have to check and see!

      - Does this happen with both wireless and wired devices? I've only ever noticed it happening with the locks. TV, phones, Ring camera, laptop all work just fine.

      - What channel configurations are currently set on the router?  Not sure on this. Will have to look next time I'm there (it's a short-term rental). I didn't change anything since I set up the Orbi router via the app.

      - What is the distance between this one device and the RBR and a RBS? - It's roughly 5-8' from the router. The other lock (We have 2) is roughly 5-8' from the satellite.

      Thank you!!

        Extender is not needed here.

Lets try this, try turning down the power output of the RBRs wifi radios from 100% to 25% and see if this changes anything. Under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

  • Which specific Schlage lock? (They have SO many.)

Generally, Internet of Things (IoT) devices have WiFi radios that detect only 2.4G channels. They are totally unaware of and cannot be affected by other radio signals (5G WiFi, television, portable phones, AM/FM radio.)

Sometimes door locks are not "in a great location" in terms of WiFi signal.  One solution is to install an inexpensive WiFi Extender that will connect to the home WiFi and create a 2.4G WiFi signal specifically for the IoT device. (often under $20 on Amazon).  If the extender is located with a clear line of sight to the lock mechanism, it may stay connected more easily.

      Hello!

      Model # BE489WB (https://www.schlage.com/en/home/products/BE489WBCAMFFF.html#)

From what I've researched too, it should only pickup the 2.4G channel too just like you said. I'd say the lock is roughly 5-8 feet from our modem and router. We have Spectrum as our internet provider and use their modem. The other lock is roughly 5-8 feet from one of the Orbi Satellites.

Because the lock is so close to the router, do you think an extender is necessary? I had thought about getting one as a hail-mary because I am willing to try everything at this point. I think there is an outlet right by the front door that it could plug in to and allow for a clear line of sight to the lock.

This home is a short-term rental and guests get their own unique code when they book, but if the lock goes offline our system cannot put the code into the lock and it's a whole annoying thing on our end. I just need the dang lock to stay on wifi all the time. #technology

Took a while, but it is confirmed:

        • How often is "constantly"?
        • Do both locks disconnect, or one more than the other?
        • What does it take to get the locks to reconnect?

Unless there is something like a solid concrete wall between the Orbi WiFi unit and the lock, then installing a WiFi extender would seem unnecessary.  If your smartphone has a WiFi Analyzer app (there are dozens), it would be relatively simple to hold the phone close to the lock and observe the WiFi signal strength of the 2.4G channel.
