RBRE960: downloading "large" files over lan/ethernet ports always fails
i've been having a very odd issue with my orbi router's ethernet/lan ports for some months now.. it took me a while to even figure out what the common factor was (devices connected to router via ethernet).
i'm not sure even how to describe it but basically: when trying to download "large" files (> 30mb maybe? not large in modern terms :) ), the download always begins but quickly times out and fails to complete.
if i try to download smaller files (a web page) then the download completes correctly. the thing which confuses me (i'm quite ignorant about these things), is that watching streamed tv shows on my appletv, for example, works fine over ethernet... BUT trying to connect my appletv to protonvpn always fails (but it works when the appletv is connected via wifi).
i eventually got to a point where i figured it had to be faulty ethernet ports on my RBRE960, so i bought a brand new RBRE960.. exactly same model etc.. and... i still have the same issue.
i've replaced all the cables (all are cat6), done multiple factory resets over the months, i've talked to the ISP (i have a ONT1 fibre modem).. i've tried macs, raspberry pi, appletvs, synology nas, etc.. all the same issue.
here's what i get when i try to download a 55.4mb file over wifi.. everything is fine:
and this is what i get when i try ethernet (this one is connected to the 2.5 port, but it's exactly the same behaviour with the other 3 ports.. no other device is connected via ethernet).. it starts ok:
then speed drops to 0 after a few seconds:
and stays like that.. i grabbed this screenshot after a minute, but trust me, the avg dload speed just keeps dropping, time left keeps climbing and current speed goes on at zero:
this issue caused all my synology hyper backups to fail for a month or two until i figured it out, so i guess it occurs with sending data too.
just to reiterate: everything works over wifi.
anyone else seen anything like this?! :)
cheers,
Mike

several replies seem to have disappeared, but someone suggested lowering the network speed when trying to download a large file over ethernet.. i have suspected it might be due to transfer going "too fast" (for the ONT?).. is there a way on the orbi router i can try throttling ethernet speed? or is this something that i need to do on the computer doing the downloading?
also, could MTU size be the problem? i have the orbi set to 1500, the ISP says 1500 or 1492 - i've tried 1492 in the past but wondering if there could be something wrong there.

Check with the ISP to see what MTU values they are supporting. I believe that most Cable and Fiber ISPs support max 1500 MTU. Could be some variances though. I know back in DSL days, 1492 or 1472 was common for DSL ISPs.
Testing speeds directly with the ONT is just for getting a comparison check with out the RBR being online.
Seen odd issues with some Fiber ISP and these ONTs they use with NG routers. Can be some interaction or interoperability issues with these ONTs.

What is the brand and model# of the ethernet adapter connecting to the RBR?
Happens with a different PC?
Does this happen when downloading say using a web browser or some different way of downloading files?
What Firmware version is currently loaded?
What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem/ONT, PC and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, Smart Parental Controls or Circle, IPv6, Traffic Meter.- malachi1Guide

hmm i'm not sure what you mean by ethernet adapter? do you mean the fibre ONT? if so, it's an ONT 200:

the ONT connects to the RBR via that came with the orbi (i've tried other cables)

yeah, i've tried multiple macs, raspberry pi, appletvs, synology nas, etc.. all the same issue.

doesn't seem to matter - the screenshots i posted above are with curl, but it happens with all the ways i've tried.

V7.2.7.15_5.1.16

i'm using brand new cat6 cables - i've tried a bunch over the past few months. i bought an ethernet cable tester and tested all of them.

i keep smart parental controls, ipv6, circle and traffic meter disabled.. armor was disabled until last week - didn't make a difference

And does same thing happen if you directly connect to the ISP ONT with same PC and run your tests there?
You might try downgrading FW to v.21 and test.
Also if you have a friend or family member that has a different ISP configuration, try the RBR at there place to see if the problem follows or not.
