When trying to "apply" changes, get a "400 Bad Request"

Hi,

I have the same issue...

Firmware up to date (V7.2.6.21_5.0.20)

When trying to "apply" changes, get a "400 Bad Request"

When selecting, then deselecting the "Support Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA)" , then "Apply" works...

But the rules are not taken into account...

LAN setup :

Results after multiple reboot :

  • Be sure to clear out all browser caches before entering the routers web page.

Try a different browser, IE11, Firefox or Opera.

Try a factory reset and setup from scratch. Don't load any saved config file from back up.

A complete pull of the power adapters for a period of time after the factory reset then walk thru the setup wizard and setup from scratch with a wired PC and web browser. https://kb.netgear.com/22697/How-do-I-install-my-NETGEAR-router-using-the-router-web-interface
Recommend setting the default DHCP IP address pool range to the following after applying and a factory reset: 172.16.#.100 to 122.16.#.200.

I would power OFF the ISP modem for 1 minute. Factory reset the router and power it off. Power ON the ISP modem and let it sync. Then power ON the router and walk thru the setup wizard again using a wired PC and a web browser.
Press the back reset button for 15 seconds then release.

Or use the ERASE button on the routers web page to factory reset the router:

Could you please humor an Old Guy and make a screen shot of the Help information that pops up from the bottom of the screen when the arrow is selected?  I understand what APIPA is, but am totally confused about the meaning of "Support..."

These automatic IP addresses are in a totally different IP subnet from the normal private IP address spaces:

I have two different Orbi routers, and neither has this option on the LAN Setup page.  Nor can I find any mention of this option in the RBR850 User Manual.  Sort of hoping that there is information in the Help screen that may explain what this option accomplishes.

There was a post on the forum back in 2022 asking about this, but no answer.

There is a Knowledge Base article saying that firmware v4.6.9.11 adds support for APIPA:

    Thanks

p.s. If this is obvious and I am just "dumber than dirt", somebody please point me in the right direction.

APIPA was a unknown feature that came in on v.11 back then. We asked NG was that was about but i don't honestly remember the feedback as as to why they put it in, it's been too long. This feature should not be in current v7 FW as NG removed it.

The user should factory reset the RBR and setup from scratch. Be sure to clear out all browser caches as well before starting the setup routine using a web browser and PC.

The user should be able to use any of the 3 IP class referenced as they are mentioned for home IP configurations.

        APIPA == Zero-configuration networking

Microsoft refers to this address autoconfiguration method as Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA).

Not sure what this would mean for the Orbi Router NAT implementation - in the eyes of the limited memory space 8-)

Reading through the messages again, I am struck by this in the first message.  I have firmware v7.2.6.21 on my RBR750 and the APIPA option does not appear.  Does this version of firmware have different options for the 850 product than for the 750 product?

I went off on this tangent after observing the screen shot showing "Support APIPA" (the first post) and could not find the option on my 750 firmware v7.2.6.21_5.0.20

        Very confused.

On the original question, researching an http 400 error is not a trivial topic.  My approach would be to fire up Wireshark and capture the conversation between my computer and the Orbi.  Because it is http (not encrypted), the request should be readable, although it might not be particularly informative.

For most users, manually reinstalling the current firmware and doing a Factory Reset is probably a more straightforward process.
