RBE771: 6th wired satellite missing / 5th Config Sync

Hello,

I am seeing what appears to be a reproducible issue with my Orbi RBE771 running firmware V10.5.20.10.

Hardware

Router: RBE771

Satellites: 6 × RBE770

Firmware: V10.5.20.10 on router and all satellites

All satellites use Ethernet backhaul through unmanaged Netgear switches in a star topology (no daisy chaining).

Observed behavior

With 4 satellites connected:

Attached Devices correctly shows all 4 satellites as Wired / Good.

With 5 satellites connected:

Attached Devices correctly shows all 5 satellites as Wired / Good.

After adding the 6th satellite:

One of the existing satellites changes from Wired / Good to Wired / Config Sync.

The 6th satellite does not appear on the Attached Devices page.

The Firmware Update page correctly lists all 6 satellites running firmware V10.5.20.10.

Network performance

Despite the display issue:

Wi-Fi performance remains excellent (approximately 1 Gbps beside each satellite).

Roaming works normally.

Router logs show no satellite disconnects.

The network continues to operate normally.

As another test, before powering on the 6th satellite I had only about 2 bars of Wi-Fi signal in that room. After powering it on, the signal increased to 3 bars, indicating that the 6th satellite is providing coverage even though it does not appear on the Attached Devices page.

Troubleshooting already performed

Factory reset of the router and all satellites.

Rebuilt the entire mesh from scratch.

Updated every device to firmware V10.5.20.10.

Verified Ethernet backhaul.

Using unmanaged Netgear switches.

Has anyone else experienced this with an RBE771 using six wired RBE770 satellites?

Specifically, the 6th satellite appears on the Firmware Update page but not on Attached Devices, while one of the existing satellites changes Wired / Good to Wired / Config Sync after the 6th satellite is added.

Any suggestions or confirmation from others running six wired RBE770 satellites would be appreciated.

Thank you.

  • I performed the requested test by disconnecting the Ethernet cable from one satellite, leaving five satellites connected by Ethernet and one using wireless backhaul.

The result was the same. Attached Devices shows only five satellites, all as Wired / Good. The sixth satellite still does not appear on the Attached Devices page, although it continues to appear on the Firmware Update page.

The sixth satellite is operational and provides Wi-Fi coverage, so it appears to be functioning normally. Changing one satellite from wired to wireless backhaul did not change the behavior.

This suggests the issue is not related to all six satellites using wired backhaul.

One additional question: have you or Netgear been able to test an RBE771 with six RBE770 satellites on the current firmware? Since the sixth satellite is detected on the Firmware Update page and is fully operational, but never appears on the Attached Devices page, I'm wondering if this could be a firmware or UI issue specific to this configuration.

    Thanks.

    Thank you for your reply.

I have not yet tested one satellite using wireless backhaul while leaving the other five wired, but I can do so if you think it would help.

The satellites are connected through Netgear MS308 unmanaged 2.5 GbE switches in a star topology. There are no managed switches.

The router and all six satellites are running firmware V10.5.20.10.

The house is approximately 7,500 square feet over three floors.

    I performed additional testing:

    • With 4 wired satellites, all show as Wired / Good.

    • With 5 wired satellites, all show as Wired / Good.

    • After adding the 6th wired satellite, one satellite changes to Wired / Config Sync and the 6th satellite does not appear on the Attached Devices page.

    • The Firmware Update page still lists all 6 satellites.

The network itself works normally. Wi-Fi speeds remain around 1 Gbps, roaming works correctly, and the 6th satellite improves coverage in its area.

Please let me know if you would like me to perform additional tests.

    Thank you.

What happens if you have one of the RBS wireless instead of wired, leaving 5 RBS ethernet connected?

That size of home, not sure if having a 6th would be of benefit.
