I ordered the RAX120 yesterday

Hello everybody, I ordered the RAX120 yesterday (to replace my R7000, which probably got bricked, the power led is just solid amber and nothing helps with that), after which I discovered that many people complain about the rebooting issue. Just to be sure: V1 is alright, there are no users complaining about it rebooting? (if there are some, should I cancel the order immediately?) I bought RAX120-100EUS, is that V1? Considering (based on this forum thread) just RAX120-100EUS is sold in Europe, I got nervous after I found many reviews on Amazon.de (the german version of Amazon) that mention the rebooting issue. All those users should have V1, yet many say their unit reboots often

Given Amazon's. and Netgear's, history of not keeping their websites up to date, you won't know which hardware version you will receive until it turns up.

Just for fun, you could try the usual recovery process.

How to upload firmware to a NETGEAR router using Windows TFTP | Answer | NETGEAR Support

This isn't the easiest operation, so if you are forced to use it, you could try a web search to find videos that guide you through the process. Here's one:

    Different device, same approach.

  • You will find a lot of users with issues on here and the reviews because its where users go with issues. (the forums and negative reviews)

But there's a lot of users that didn't have issues and it works fine on. I'd just follow the wait and see approach. Yours might be perfectly fine. If not, I've heard rumors of a firmware in the works to fix it. If you have issues, I'm sure you can get that firmware.

  • When your 120 arrives, post the first 3 characters only of the serial number seen on the bottom sticker.

Usually also on the box. No need to even open it.

FYI, I've noticed that sometimes the numbers on the box can be covered over with other stickers that can't be removed coming from Amazon and having a used or refurb status. So if you find the box has a sticker or other stickers over this labeled box area, you'll need to visually look at the routers sticker. This should NOT be covered.

  • Thank you guys for your replies.

Yeah, unfortunately there was no information on whetber it's V1 or V2. And what do you think I got? V2 of course 😄

I will try to reflash it when I have some free time, thanks for the video. But I googled a bit and it seems even reflashing is not possible if amber is solid on R7000. But maybe I'm wrong, we'll see.

I undestand there is possibility for it to work without major problems. But, my brand new V2 that I got was a failure straight out of the box. The power connector is problematic, if I move the power cable even by a milimeter, the router reboots. And of course, it reboots even by itself, because it' a V2. The first time it rebooted was not long after I ran a speed test through the nighthawk app. And my cpu usage is below 10%. The fan never never started, even though the body of the router was pretty warm to the touch. I enabled the fan through the debug page, but it continued to reboot afterwards. I don't think it can be solved via some new firmware. If it could, Netgear would have already done so. But it's 3 years since it got released. If it could have been resolved through a new firmware, they would have done so within a couple of weeks since release, right?

There were no stickers on the box, and there was "V2" written on the box, so no need to even tell the serial number.

    My question to all:
Since I got a V2, and the first rebooting issues started right out of the box (when I needed to adjust the power cable so it could boot up), there is no point of keeping it. There is not and won't be any solution to it, because it's clearly a hardware problem.

The range on this new RAX120 was even lower than on my old R7000. I live in a 3-storey house, each floor 100m^2 with a couple of walls. Even though I have covergae throughout my house in the most part, in some places I don't receive any signal (and in places where I do, there is no 5G and the speed is slow, which is a problem). So I was looking at some other alternatives from Netgear that would satisfy my needs, and I think Orbi is a good one. I don't want to spend a thousand on it, so Orbi 753 looks good to me. My question is: do you recommend it? Would that be a downgrade over my RAX120 in some aspects? And the second question is about firmware problems. I've read here on the forum that there are some firmware problems with this 753 where the wifi drops and the satellites disconnect. The issues started this time last year when update 4.6.3.7 was pushed. Do the issues still persist?

Boxes can be unreliable. If it does not say V2 on the label, it is probably V1.

Netgear practice is that any device that doesn't say V# on the label is normally V1.

Whatever you do, do not try to flash a V1 device with V2 firmware, or vice versa. It should prevent you from doing that, but if you force it you could end up with a dead device.

    • Please post the first 3 characters seen on sticker on the router. Just because cause someone wrote v2 on the box doesn't mean it's actual.
