Upgrading past firmware v1.0.12.120 for RAX 50

A question for the community, I had extreme issues with upgrading my firmware to v1.0.12.120 several years ago. This caused me to have to reset my router and do a lot of manual configuration every time I attempted this. I did notice a lot of others had issues with this release as well. Have any of you who had problems with v1.0.12.xxx upgraded past this to v1.0.16 (or lower) and had a stable experience? In general my router has been very stable but I would like to update the firmware and keep more current, I just don't want to spend hours trying to restore everything again.

Thanks,

Dave

  • Thanks for the suggestion, I have disabled IPv6.

As for the suggestion to modify the Calix, this had been done when they installed it. CL had originally put a C3000a in front of the Calix and configured the C3000a as the router. I bought the Nighthawk to replace the C3000a because of it's terrible range. It is possible the CL has pushed down an update since the recent change to Quantum, I plan on seeing how stable this is with the IPV6 change and if it is still an issue, I will connect directly to the Calix with a cable and look at the web interface.

Not sure why the C3000 was used in front of the Calix. The Calix already in a ONT/Router/Wifi combo system. If you use the RAX router, would need to disable the wifi radios on the Calix system and use it's DMZ or IP pass thru for the RAX router. OR, leave the Calix as the main host router, disable wifi on the Calix system and configure the RAX router for AP Mode.

  • -- Protection mode is not enabled

-- I did just notice that IPV6 is enabled on the router (it used to be disabled so maybe this is the issue). The specific setting is the 6to4 tunnel

-- I have CL so my router is connected to a Calix Gigacenter 854G-1

  • So I finally updated to the latest firmware release (V1.0.17.142_2.0.100) several weeks ago and now I am seeing the same problem as before where the wifi through the WAN will suddenly stop working. I can still log into the router admin screen and a reboot fixes the issue but before I updated this had been rock solid for the past 2 years without needing a restart unless I made a change or my ISP did. It appears as though non http/https traffic is still working since the IOT devices that I have connected seem to work. I also am able to see that the WAN connection still looks available, I was able to go out and check if the firmware  was up to date from the router. However, I cannot get to any web sites or ping any internet sites like google or yahoo when this happens and nothing that uses wifi works. I tried looking at the logs in the web interface but they do not seem to show anything but access to the admin portal or denial of service messages when this happens. Are there different ways that I can troubleshoot this?

Is protection engine enabled on the router?

Is IPv6 enabled on the router?

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
