Merci

  • You will need to consider the compatibility of the disks and the NAS platform (x86, ARM or Sparc). You cannot just simply insert your existing disks to another NAS because it might just wipe out the data. However, if you will insert your existing disks to another NV+ NAS model then its just alright as long as you will insert the disks accordingly to their respective from which they were pulled-out.

Do you have a backup of all the data stored in your NAS?
Did you receive any e-mail notification that a disk/s has failed?
Is your NAS still detected on RAIDar?
What does it show on the LCD display of your NAS?

Regarding the difference of XRAID and Flex-RAID, kindly access this link: http://www.netgear.com/images/pdf/WP_XR ... 2May14.pdf

    - Thanks to Google Translate. I am open to corrections :)
  • Hi and thanks.

I don't have a problem. There is my story:
Months ago, my supply failed. I have buy another (100€) and everything is ok now. But what next if my mother board fail with my X-RAID 5 ?
    - Do i have to buy the exactly same hardware ? NV+ SPARC or i can buy an another model of ReadyNas (x86 and last model)
    - Cannot put this in a Virtual Machine to access my data ?

It was so hard to find the supply (don't want to fix the cable by myself), so if i have to find a NV+... or a motherboard, i don't think this will be possible (for exemple in 5 years).
Maybe using a Software Raid is better ? Because we can change hardware.

I'm thinking to make my own software raid or stay with my NV+...

That is not critical data, so i don't want reserve an external back up drive (4 tb !), so if i can do something in case of Hardware problem it would be cool. Else i'll do a Raid-0 and external back-up. I don't need RAID-5 if hardware failure is a problem unlike the RAID 1 that is ok.
  • First, I would suggest for you to have a backup of all the important data.

Regarding your question, if the chassis fails you can transfer the drives onto a new chassis since the OS of the NAS is saved on the drives (just insert it on the new chassis the same order as you have it on the old one) so you'll need to get the same hardware. I have heard as well that data on the drives on the NV+ (in case of failure of chassis) can be transferred to newer x86 units through SSH/TelNet access (this is a paid service though, which considers a lot of things).

First, yes my important data are saved on a 1tb external drive (and my nas is 3hd of 2tb in X-Raid 5).

A new chassis, do you mean a new ReadyNAS NV+ exactly ? Or there are models with same Hardware in Netgear Catalog ? Thinking there are not anymore SPARC model.

It's too bad that "X-Raid" netgear technology cannot abstract configuration hardware. Would be nice if we just have to buy any Netgear ReadyNas. Do i have to understand that my Ready nas is a fully material RAID ? And not hybrid Software/Hardware.

For the rest, i have found this, that is a good news, hope that's working: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=306

You said that OS is saved on the drive. Are you sure ? Because my NV+ works without drive, i have see a 1gb drive, but not sure... How can i make a OS Backup from the nas ?

    Thanks

Yes, same NV+ chassis. I believe the SPARC units are now EOL.

A little bit of a hassle I guess, but now they are focusing on the x86 and arm models and units now are more future proof (basically just transfer drives from one NAS to another. Have you considered getting the newer models like the 200 and 300 series? They're pretty good.

Yes, the OS and configuration are saved on the drives. Chassis will boot up without drives because of the flash. Do you mean backup of the config ? That can be done. But if you mean a complete linux system backup it might be a lot of work and a bit complicated.
