Can ping router fine, but DNS pings drop

Question

I've got a problem with one computer that is driving me mad! For a couple of years I've been dealing with it continuously dropping its connection with the internet, while still successfully pinging the router.

I ran a ping test with two computers simultaneously, pinging both the router and Google's static DNS (8.8.8.8). They both work fine for a bit then the troubled computer times out from the DNS but is still communicating fine with the router, while the other computer remains connected to both. Simply turning off the computers WiFi and then back on again regains the connection with the DNS. The problem doesn't occur when using an ethernet cable.

I've ruled out firewall/software issues as I did a clean OS re-install and the problem persisted while the machine was empty of any files or programs, and have done all the usual network troubleshooting and so on.

Any ideas where the issue could lie? Is it a problem with the computer? I've attached a screenshot of what is happening.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You probably want to do a tracert to 8.8.8.8. &nbsp;This will give you more information about where packets are being dropped. &nbsp;You may have to run tracert several times. &nbsp;Alternatively, use WinMTR, which will constantly probe all hops between you and 8.8.8.8.

Hey TheEther, thanks for your reply.&nbsp;&nbsp;I ran a traceroute when the problem occured and it returned stars only. Does this mean it's a problem with the computer? The router is still online and connected to the internet, and I'm able to ping the router from the mac. Firewall turned off also.&nbsp;Cheers

It returned stars, even for the first hop? &nbsp;That would signal a problem with the router. &nbsp;Can you post the output? &nbsp;Or PM it to me, if you are concerned about privacy.

Yeah no problem, heres a screenshot of the traceroute and a few other pings, the only ping that worked was the one to the router. It's weird because I can see that the router's connection to the internet is still working perfectly and all other devices aren't having any problem. After turning off the wifi and turning it on again it starts working, but then after a random amount of time it will stop working again.&nbsp;EDIT: I should also note that this happens on every network I connect to, at home, work, friends house, everywhere.&nbsp;

Hmm, I was just about to conclude that you have a problem with your router but this throws me for a loop. &nbsp;You might want to consider resetting the network settings on your Mac. &nbsp;Google&nbsp;osx reset network and try one of the suggestions. &nbsp;Be sure to back up your data.
