CAX80 with Verizon FIOS?
Greetings. So I recently moved from Spectrum to FIOS. I really trying to figure out a way to use my modem instead of Verizon, particularly not as a gateway. Do forgive me if I'm butchering any termology. My understanding is that because the CAX80 uses a LAN, I cannot connect the ethernet wire going from the ONT to the CAX80 because that port needs to be a WAN. Does that sound right?

There's not a way.
the older combo devices had a workaround you could use but I haven't seen it successfully used on the CAX versions.
You can always read through and try but it might be time to see the device and buy just a router only device.

No, but the conclusion is right. If you have an ONT with an Ethernet
port, then you can't use a CAX80 as a router because it lacks an
Ethernet WAN/Internet port.

access point, not a full-function router.

With verizon Fios, the ONT is the modem, and the horrible router that they will rent out, is just a horrible router, with the main difference being a remote access function where you can change settings from the account page on the verizon fios website.
If you have the verizon fios TV and internet package, depending on your set top box, you may need a MoCA adapter. For example, on the motorola STBs verizon disables the Ethernet port on the STB in software in order to encourage people to rent their MoCA and Ethernet router.
If you end up in that situation, I recommend not rending the overpriced but low end router from Verizon, instead, see if you can get a cheap used actiontec mi424wr or other low end older fios specific router (mainly because you can use them as a MoCA to Ethernet bridge, and often for around $15-$20. While it will be an old 802.11n WiFi router, the goal is to change its local IP something else, and disabling the DHCP server, then doing a LAN to LAN connection, as well as disabling its WiFi. Overall, it is cheaper than thestand along MoCA adapters :).
If you don't have Fios TV service, or if you have an STB where the Ethernet ports were not disabled, then you can just use your rotuer without worrying about MoCA.

Unfortunately for the CAX80, you can't even use it in faux AP mode, and by design, the CAX80 auto reboots if signal is lost on the RG6 coax connector or if the coax is disconnected from the CAX80. No idea why NG did this. :smileyembarrassed:

That might explain why I did have internet connection at various points with the CAX80 plugged into the ONT, but kept dropping very frequently.

it wont work.
If you tend to move between multiple providers due to apt/home move, always buy stand-alone router such as RAXE500, RBK752, etc
If you need to stop paying rental, buy a cable modem.
with FiOS and ATT fiber, you have to always pay rental.

At the moment, I don't see any rental fees on the FIOS modem, but I'll def buy a router if it comes to it if I do see a hint of a charge. I'll keep the CAX80 for future use if the area I move to doesn't have fiber. I'm a big fan of that router. Big bummer it can't be used with FIOS
