How to connect to closest extender

Hi, i have setup without any problems the powerline XAVB5001

So i have one plug connected to router and another plug in another room.

The problem is my devices, iphone and such, connect to the first plug which is further away thus resuilting in low signal.

Is there a way for the devices to auto select the closest plug?

Thanx!

  • XAVB5001 is a powerline ethernet kit - how are these devices (iphone & such) connecting to it?

If the first plug is near the router, and that is wifi, then just swap the plugs. You want the wifi extender farthest from the router. That is how I have my system set up.
  • Aha! Am i not supposed to connect the 1st (wifi) plug to the router?? I thought so by the instructions!!!

If its as u say i am completely stupid!!!!
  • Neither of the "plugs" in the XAVB5001 kit is "WiFi" capable - the kit contains a pair of identical powerline Ethernet adapters - you need to re-define the problem.

One IS wifi. Followed michaelkenward's suggestion, now everything works fine.

Wifi plug should not connect to the router but in the room you intend to have extra wifi signal in, that was my misunderstanding.

Netgear has a habit of bundling things in various ways in different markets and with confusing names. My XWNB5201 has a XAV5201 and XWN5001 (wifi). But I have various other Netgear bundles to confuse me even further. Maybe Arismac had the same "brain fade".

The box that came with my kit is pretty clear on the issue.

"Connect the XAV5201 unit to your modem router."

"Connect the XWN5001 unit to an Ethernet-enabled device - such as an Internet-ready HDTV or set-top box - end other wireless devices through the WiFi access point."

In other words, don't connect the wifi bit to the router.

Manuals are often more confusing than the boxes.

Glad it worked ih the end.
