Powerline 1200 getting 10% speeds only 10 yards from modem

I have Frontier (Verizon) Fios 100/100mbps internet. I'm using an Actiontech MI424WR Rev I router.

The WiFi from the router works great as long as I'm in the room it's installed in, but it's terrible anywhere else; even 10 yards down the hallway in the living room. Other devices can connect, but with poor/fair quality at best. Streaming with a Firestick is basically impossible.

I purchased the Netgear Powerline 1200 in hopes that giving the Fire TV a direct ethernet connection would improve the speeds, but it seems to be even worse than the WiFi.

With just the Master router connected and set to channel 11, I get around 90 mbps down/100 up via WiFi in the same room. When I run the test from the living room I get about 25 mbps down/55 mbps up.

I then configured a router as an AP (gave same SSID as Master, assigned static IP, disabled DHCP, put on different channel 6).

Once configured I connected AV1200 powerline adapter 1 into LAN 1 on the Master router and plugged it into the wall. I then plugged powerline adapter 2 into the wall in the other room and connected it to LAN 1 on configured AP 655. All three lights on both adapters are solid green.

Now when I run a speed test I'm only getting about 7 mbps down/ 20 up.

I then completely unplugged the AP from adapter 2 and plugged in the Fire TV directly via ethernet and still get only 7 mbps down/15-20 up.

What do you think might be killing the speeds? Is there anything else I can do to improve this? It seems like things are running faster when connected to the Master router and not using the Powerline at all.

Any suggestions on what I could try? If not then I suppose I'll just deal with the slow speeds I already had and return the Powerline.

Thanks in advance.

I actually exchanged it for another brand and it's working much better. Thanks for the reply.

It isn't easy to unravel this. Is the Fire TV using wifi or direct, wired, LAN with the Powerline?

Direct is best. If you get seriously slow speeds then investigate that. If it is a wifi link, then check that the plug and router are using different SSIDs so that the poor TV isn't getting confused about which one to connect to.

Again, confusing for me. 7 Mbps down should be good for TV. But if you get 7 Mbps  down and 20 Mbps that is really odd. It suggests that the plugs are doing fine, or they would not get that seriously good upload speed.

You seem to have tried all sorts of quirky things that may do more harm than good. Start with a bog standard approach. No fancy tricks.

    Then add refinements as needed.

But someone else may have a better understanding of what is going on. As I say, I am bit baffled. I just follow what goes by here and the system you have set up should do just fine. It isn't that dissimilar to what I use.

      Sorry for the confusion.

Plugging the Fire TV directly into the Powerline adapter via ethernet gets 7 mbps down/ 20 up (I downloaded a speedtest via kodi addons).

Connecting the Fire TV via WiFi gets 25 mbps down/55 mbps up.

I hope this makes more sense.

        Hi VioD,

Speeds can vary depends on how far the distance are. This is same as the wireless. The farther the distance it travels(electric current) the slower the connection.
