I bought this yesterday as it is supposedly compatible with Windows 8. It says adapter not found yet it shows up in my Device Manager. Since I cannot connect to the internet on that computer I cannot go to the Netgear site

Yes I did install/reinstall the software several times infact and also for stand alone.

Well I printed out the whole manual and followed and it still isn't found so I am giving up and returning it to the store and getting another brand

Where do you see this "adapter not found" message? Windows? Another device may not be any better if there is an issue in your Windows configuration.
