A7000 stops working with SVM mode

I'm on Windows 11 pro.

I'm trying to enable SVM mode on my BIOS so I can run docker, but when I reboot after enabling it, the wifi no longer works. Even in windows' settings, when I click 'network and internet' the settings window turns red and crashes

When I disabled SVM mode, wifi and the settings network page works.

Any idea what's going on?

  • For the sake of visibility, my router is Nighthawk CAX80, Firmware Version V5.1.1.8

I recently ran all the update files from ASUS for my motherboard and whatnot.

Do you see the crash if you boot up in safe mode with networking?  (Wifi might not actually work - not sure if wifi is disabled in that mode).

Since the A7000 appears to function correctly until SVM mode is enabled in the BIOS, my thought was there might be something in the A7000 firmware that cannot handle SVM mode on Windows 11.

Could be.  Hopefully not, since the product is EoL, so Netgear won't update anything.  But also could be an outdated BiOS or chipset drivers on the PC.

Gemini is saying that some users have found that disabling "Fast Boot" in the BiOS or "Fast Startup" in the Windows power settings resolves the problem.  Could be true, since the AI large language models are often trained on reddit...

Its not that easy to find the "Fast Startup" option, it's in control panel -> power options -> change what the power button does.  Note you need to open the control panel with elevated privileges to change the setting.

But getting a new wifi adapter is of course a reasonable alternative, especially if you have a wifi 6 or wifi 7 router.

It might be worth considering getting a WiFi adapter that is certified to be compatible with Windows 11 Pro.  The A7000 firmware was last updated in 2018 and shows compatibility with Windows 7/8/10.

Hmmm.  Internet search for running Docker on Windows 11 does not mention BIOS:

It's an AMD setting ("secure virtual machine").  It's not needed for Docker, but I believe it is needed for WSL2.

Is this happening when the A7000 is removed from the PC?

When I remove the A7000, it still continues to have the network and internet setting page turns red and crashes.
