Wifi Extender Issues - EX7700

Hello,

I have been running a Negear Nighthawk router (Tri Band Ax8 - RAX70) with the Router Firmware Version V1.0.19.172 without any issues.

I purchased a Netgear Wifi extender EX7700 to expand the home Wifi. My issue is that when a device connects to the WIFI extender it appears to be registered as a new device and the main router then places this into the "Home" profile in Parental Controls in the Netgear Nighthawk app. This happens even if the device was previously registered on the main router and assigned a "profile" in SPC.

I have applied a static IP to the Wifi extender but the problem continues. I'm sure this is not normal behaviour and the main router should be assigning the IP addresses.

Any suggestions or solutions to fix this issue would be appreciated.

What static IP address is assigned and placed on the EX extender?

What happens if you disable SPC on the NH app and check for device operation and IP addressing?

I assigned ip of 192.168.1.240 for the extender. I will need to come back once I have disabled SPC and checked configuration and IP addressing

Is that address put on the extender or reservied on the router?

  • Ok so I can confirm that the static IP is outside the DHCP range on the router. DHCP range ends at 192.168.1.230 and Extender is set with 192.168.1.241

When a device connects to the extender it sometimes appears to get a duplicate IP to another device and also the device is registered as DEV. I will get some screenshots and post. Should I try a factory reset on the Extender and start again ?

Now for devices that are connected with the Extender, try setting up some IP address reservations ON the router for those devices connecting at the extender. Mainly devices that you are attempting to control with SPC.

The extender IP address is not relevant, certainly not for SPC - it's about the IP address of the devices connecting (associating) to the extender wireless.

Cumbersome is that -all- the Netgear Extenders (and most others I have seen) are doing MAC address translation for all devices associating the extender wireless - a so called "Virtual MAC Address". DHCP servers (e.g. on the router) don't allow to configure the same DHCP LAN IP address for a device appearing on the LAN with a different MAC, so any system will be confused, not only SPC - more the user(s) are. And the community is full with similar questions as there is (to my knowledge) top operate such extenders without a MAC address translation as it's a key component of the design.

So please start at the correct side of the issue. Sometimes, a static IP address might help, but this is unfortunate for most users of wireless devices like mobiles, PCs, notebooks, ....
