EOS - need new device for my network

Hello,

I got an email from Netgear notifying me that my router R6220- AC1200 has reached end of service and is no longer supported.

The recommendation was to upgrade to Nighthawk WiFi 7 Router RS300. When I looked online, the price was really expensive.

My network is simple, just home stuff. I don't have heavy traffic. My wifi plan is only 150 mbs and it works fine with both my current modem and router.

Are there other Netgear supported routers that are less expensive? I want dual band, ideally 4 ethernet ports, but I'd make due with 2.

Any suggested much appreciated.

Thanks!

EOS doesn't mean that it needs to be retired. It just means it doesn't get any further updates that aren't critical and there isn't hardware to replace it. I have several famiy members using stuff from Wifi 5 on up that still works great and doesn't need to be changed.

You can feel free to upgrade to something later but I'd keep in mind, your service is only 150mbps. Pretty much most of the RAX line would be fully capable for quite a while up to gigabit service without issues.

You can for sure get the newer BE stuff. But I wouldn't always push it. I've use the RS600 and have a RBE970 and they aren't any faster than my prior RAXE500 or RBKE963. And I have over 100 devices on my network with 2 gig service. So your 150mbps, would be fine

I do agree with Plemans that there is no need to rush with an EOL product.  You can find some good deals at the end of the year or during Cyber Monday/BF sales and get what you want to get at a better price.  There is also the option of using 3rd party firmware that is still supported, but I personally can't say how well or safe that firmware is, although some people use them.

Ultimately, it is up to you what you want to do, and you should take all of our advice with a grain of salt, because what works for us or what we are comfortable with may not be what you are comfortable with or work for you.

  • After reading many reviews from customers on Amazon, including that the RAX70 is also going to reach EOS soon, I think I'll wind up playing it safe with a new device - the one Netgear recommended, with a 20% discount. It would be such a dragon if I got a lemon. I don't want to deal with that. Thanks a lot for all the input. It helped me a great deal.

The RAX70 is a pretty solid device. It'll have significantly more capability than your last router and will easily max out your 150mbps plan

  • I found a "renewed" Nighthawk on Amazon for $69.99: Netgear RAX70-100NAR Nighthawk AX6600 Tri-Band WIFI 6 Router (Renewed).

    Is this one okay? Thanks.

IF it was me, I'd check the used market. A last gen RAX device like the RAX70/80 can be picked up much cheaper and will be a massive upgrade over the R6220

Hi, and thank you for the recommendation! The only outlet I know of is Amazon. Maybe newegg? I'm definitely willing to go with a refurbished device.

      Thanks again!

I personally am leery at buying a used/renewed electronic device as you never know what you are going to get.  You may get something that had no issues and was returned, or you may get the opposite, but to each his own.

  • Thanks very much, I didn't realize that I had some wiggle room with time. I appreciate your reply.

I guess I'll wait until then. Although, the email included a 20% discount code on the Nighthawk device. I wonder if the sales during the holidays would do better than 20%.

Well, I would comparison shop if I were you.  Usually, manufacturers (in general) tend to be higher when it comes to price as compared to online and big box retailers.

Hi, that's probably true. No need to rush. I called my ISP and asked what routers I could use and was recommended Eero. I've been using Netgear forever. But for my specific needs, maybe their products are becoming out of reach for me.

  • I would wait until black Friday sales or cyber-Monday or even end of year after Christmas, then you can get what you want hopefully on sale.  Just because something is EOL, doesn't mean you have to upgrade right away, especially if you are not having issues.
