Re: R6700v3 Firmware update V1.0.4.122_10.0.95 problem
Model R6400v2
Windows 10 Home and Windows 7 Pro (all latest updates on both)
I had all the same issues as mentioned above with the exception that I initially tried updating firmware through the web client using the latest version of Opera (using DNS-over-HTTPS with Cloudflare provider). I also got the dreaded "Connection Refused" error when I tried to re-access the router setup web page.
I then tried the following with no luck:
-- Powering off and on the router
-- Powering off and on my cable modem
-- Turning off DNS-over-HTTPS in Opera
-- Turning DNS-over-HTTPS off and on in latest versions of Google Chrome and Firefox
Oddly enough I initially seemed to have kept wired ethernet access to the internet for all external websites. However, after pausing and resuming Windows 7 and 10 the next day, I lost wired connections to the internet and only had wireless connections.
I knew about the TFTP manual re-flashing of the router, but I didn't want to risk losing all internet connectivity if it failed. So in despiration I ordered a replacment Netgear router - a R6700v3. It arrived this morning and I got it working just fine with its v1.0.4.106 firmware. I will not update with new firmware until Netgear fixes this problem with new firmware. I agree with JayInTech - the problem is not solved!
I will try re-flashing my R6400v2 using TFTP. If I am successful with the new firmware, I will return the R6700v3 for a refund. If I have to re-flash my R6400v2 with older firmware to get it working, I will return the R6700v3 for a refund and then order a different brand of router as a replacement.
I've had Netgear equipment forever. However, the clock is ticking on my loyalty to Netgear...

OK, it looks like I'm between a rock and a hard spot whichever way I go:

I can either go back to older firmware to regain web access to the router; but if I do, I will have to risk security vulnerabilities.
Sorry Netgear, either release a fix soon or I find a new brand of router.

Many of those "security vulnerabilities" are theoretical. They come out of professional security labs that earn a living selling software and services or from military labs where they fight of naughty enemies.
Most of the vulnerabilities that turn up rarely make it into the real world of consumer grade routers. If all the people who never update their firmware became infected, the planet would be would be awash with compromised devices. People turn up here with firmware that can be many years out of date. Security is rarely the problem.
You won't see many, if any, reports here from people who have who get infected. That is more likely to happen when someone sends them a phishing email and they respond unwisely. Then there are the people who call a fake support site and invite crooks to invade their hardware. We see more of them that security woes due to firmware.
I'm not playing down the need to keep firmware up to date, I always do, but it helps to balance the risks of running old firmware with the hassle of putting up with bugs. It is your call, but decisions are best made knowing the background.

I have a NAS, 3 Windows PCs, 2 Linux laptops, 1 Windows laptop, 2 Raspberry Pis, running hundreds of apps, and more than a dozen smart devices attached to my router. I don't have the time or inclination to do a risk assessment on all firmware and software updates. I just do them all and trust that the firmware and software developers are competent. If I find that they aren't, I move on quickly to those who are. Survival of the fittest - learned the hard way from more than 30 years of personal computing.

Hi DexterJB,
I never tried to load an old config file after using TFTP from the Microsoft Win10 Command Prompt to manually update the firmware to V1.0.4.122_10.0.95.
I had the same problem as KwikTripper.

Hi DexterJB
I was locked out of the web interface following a manual update. I don't know how else to reflash new firmware or revert to old firmware (not my preferred option).
I have not tried the new firmware. I do not remember the status of the power LED.
I have replaced my Netgear router with a different brand, which is working just fine.
