WNDR4500v1 runs slow for all wifi-connected Android Devices within 24hrs

Firmware # V1.0.1.40_1.0.68

Wireless Security: WPA2-PSK [AES]

Channel Mode: Auto

Affects: all Android smartphones and tablets connected to the router's standard wifi. Laptops wifi connected or any computer wired/hard-connected not impacted.

Symptoms: Any Android device after a 12-24hr period when trying to access the Internet via the wifi of this router will be very slow. Its only when I reboot or turn Router On/Off that it then restores that speed UNTIL an undetermined 12-24hr all Android devices will go back to being slow.

Anyone with an explination as this makes no sense. This started happening for no reason in the last few months but the Router has had no firmware updates in a year+.

Why would rebooting the Router thus restored all Inet speed to all Android devices but then after X amount of time then become brutually sluggish until Router needs another reboot?

Lovely.. guess I should figure this nearly 5 year old beast has given up the ghost and its just basically time to choose between Asus or Netgear based off sites likes smallnetbuilder.com as I want a v.powerful AC3xxx or AC5xxxx router. Wanted to wait for the next Wifi standard to replace AC but thats taking too long.

When router is rebooted everything is purged and all the functions are restarted. The router may have a bad memory chip and or memory leak. Do yourself a favor and replace it.

Hmm.. that's sorta not what I wanted to hear but the 4500 is ~4-5years old and we got some good mileage out of it. I wanted to wait on the next wireless standard to supersede AC but I can easily afford a new high-end router if necessary but its a toss-up between Asus and Netgear as both get exceptional reviews. Do I want the elite-end AC5300 (Nighthawk R8500 X8) or AC3200 (Nighthawk R8000 X6 which is now almost 2 years old but leads the Router charts in that AC category). As mentioned, I wanted to wait for the next Wifi standard to replace AC (which is on the way) but the situation with the Android devices is becoming absurd.

I would NOT buy another netgear product until they get their act together. I have a r8000 and don't care for it I also have a r7000 which I prefer. The last router I paid for was R6300v2 the other two were beta freebies. Elite should not be used to describe any netgear router, Guinea Pig would be more accurate.

  • The same thing just started happening to me too. Android phones are affected, but Windows laptops and other devices are not.

I find it extremely suspicious that it started happening around the same time it started happening to you. Previously, everything was working fine.

Also, rebooting the router fixes it, but not for long.
