nighthawk ac1750 DHCP-DNS setup

I am trying to get pi-hole with unbound working on my network. My sysadmin/network guru friend is telling me:

"The DHCP configuration in the router (that is the DHCP server configuration that passes out IP addresses to your clients) should be passing out the PiHole address as the DNS server (primary) and Google's (secondary) to each device on the network. It should also be passing out the router's IP address for the gateway."

First, is this possible on this router?

If so, I have been unable to find out how/where this is done in the router configuration. Hoping someone here can point me to how/where this is done via the router's configuration software as my friend is not familiar with this particular router.

Thanks!

I'd expect what works on one router to work on another one. You just need to get to the settings that your fiends has tweaked. Either that or the well developed pi-hole community.

Manuals are always a good place to start.

    Visit the support pages:

    Support | NETGEAR

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.

You may have done that already. I can't tell from your message.

I mention it because Netgear gave up on supplying paper manuals and CD versions some years ago and people sometimes miss the downloads.

The manual was of no help. Web searches yield forums which state Netgear does not support this. Other users have resorted to loading alternative router firmware on their Netgear Hardware. I am not willing to go there...

      Thanks.

You're using the router as the dhcp and the pi-hole as dns?

Or are you trying to setup the pi-hole to run as DHCP and dns?

Usually what I do, is setup the pihole's ip address into the routers primary dns for both the ipv4 and ipv6 setup.

then you have to make sure in the pi-hole, you have the dns servers selected for what you want used after the blocking.

I did a quick screen snip/paste into word of my ipv4/6 settings and my pihole dns setting

Yes. Currently using router for DHCP and pi-hole for DNS. My understanding now is, that with Netgear's limitations, I will have to use the pi-hole for both.

I don't see your Word document with the snip/paste of your setup. (?) How do I get to it?

      Greatly appreciate the help.

It was actually a pdf. Had to redo it because the forum wouldn't take a word docx. You can setup pihole dns on this. I've done it on multiple routers from Netgear
