Possible to Setup Failover with RS700

Is it possible to set up an automatic Internet failover (LTE or cable) for the RS700? I understand this would require an adapter or additional device since the RS700 is, itself, not dual or multi WAN.  Presuming the answer is "yes", what are the options? Would it be possible to use a product similar to the UniFi LTE Backup Pro?

  • Yeah, it is. I currently have a Netgear PR60X (one 10gig Internet port and one 2.5gig Internet port) as the router with failover internet, and the RS700 is set up as the main router. Just note that in this setup, there's a double NAT, so you'll need to enter port forwarding settings properly in both the failover router and the RS700.

Other routers outside of the Netgear PR60X are the TP-Link ER8411 (one multi WAN internet port, rest are 1 gigabit) and TP-Link ER605 (gigabit ports only). I haven't tried them out yet, but I believe all of the Ubiquiti EdgeRouters are capable of multi WAN as well. Most of them seem to be gigabit ports only.

From what I understand, the UniFi LTE Backup Pro would need to connect to one of the Internet ports on the failover capable router. According to its description, it requires a UniFi Gateway, so I'm not sure if you can get around that.

  • Natively, no, the RS doesn't have failover features. Would need external equipment for this.

Furry, are you saying that ShadowMario's suggestion above will not work? Or are you just confirming that the RS700 is not dual WAN?

RS only has LAG, not dual WAN for fail over internally.

I presume how he has it working with external HW, is working for him.

  • I am looking at using a TP-Link ER707-M2 multi-WAN router for the failover (and maybe load balancing) capability only, with the RS700 remaining as the primary router. While I play around with networking, I have to admit I really don't know what I am doing. Is there any reason this should not work? If it may likely work, could someone give me simple instructions for setting it up or point me toward a place where I might find such instructions? Is it as simple as setting one of the LAW/WAN ports on the TP-Link ER707-M2 to WAN, plugging in the two ISP's to the TP-Link ER707-M2, and then connecting a cable from a LAN port on the TP-Link ER707-M2 to the WAN port on the RS700?
