RS180 /BE5500 5ghz radio issue "teardown" error.

Hello.

I bought this RS180 Router new  from Amazon (1-21-26) and out of the box even with factory ssid/ setting it started out with the default "Netgear 11"  ssid  and within 30 to 40 seconds of connecting  my phone to the wifi the ssid signal dropped out and came back with "teardown" as an ssid  and wrong password message. the RS180 would stay like that until i restarted it. Then it would reboot with the default info again  and within 30 to 40 seconds the wifi would drop out and again come back with that same error of "teardown" as the ssid.  The only way i could even get into this router to configure it was the web UI, being the nighthawk app on my phone required wifi. Now after Many days of going back between this unit and my old tp-link trying everything i can think of, all the firmware's, all the resets, all the 30/30/30 hard resets, nothing.

I finaly traced this issue down to just when the 5ghz radio is enabled.

if you disable the 5ghz band in the web ui settings this router seems to operate correctly  for the most part.

( sorry but the firmware/ web ui is the worst i have seen in almost 30 years as far as functionality that ACTUALLY DOES what the settings are supposed to do)

At this point my conclusion is that the actual hardware, or the 5ghz radio it self is damaged being i have tried everything i can think of software and settings related.

Everything , 2.4ghz, all the wired ports , connections and basic web ui/ android app seem to function as intended with the 5ghz radio disabled. This kinds bums a person out especially for a $200 usd unit.  (was on sale for $159, but still...) and A LOT of time wasted.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated

Thank you.

Return it. Get your money back. Purchase another.

  • You could factory reset the router as a last resort to see if works properly. Why do you have to enable the 5 Ghz wifi in a new router? It should have been enabled by default.

The way I read the original post, 5G was enabled and the router was not working.  Only by turning off 5G could he get it to work, and a router without 5G is useless.

OP mentioned that the issue was traced down when the 5 Ghz radio was enabled. I was asking about that.

  • Yes, Everything was enabled out of the box as it should have been. This is why i had to disable the 5ghz radio to get any functional wifi connection ( I am using 2.4ghz only atm). I should also add that the radio issue was also affecting the Wired ports/ entire router, causing even the wired clients and the router itself to basically reboot or boot cycle.

ONLY with the Wifi totaly disabled (both 2.4, & 5ghz) OR just  the 5ghz Will the router function without the teardawn error and random wired client disconnects.  Again, this was all out of the box, NEW and no signs of open box or a returned product.

As for returning the unit, i am on that path as well, only i have to purchase another new router to use in the meantime as my previous one was bad/ overheating, hence why i bought a new one in the first place. Only question now is will i get another netgear or go back to tp-link or another brand. I do understand the luck of the draw with new hardware but this  persistent issue has made me second guess getting another netgear product.

Thank you all for your suggestions and responses.

At the end of the day, it is one failed hardware unit.  For me a "persistent issue" would mean seeing the same problem with the replacement.  Of course it is up to you whether you want to simply replace it, or go with somethine else.

Whether you stick with Netgear or not, you could limp along with 2.4 ghz until the replacement arrives, and then ship the failed product back.
