RN102 - My share folders disappeared
Hello community,
I searched a lot for a solution to my problem, but I didn't find exactly my problem, nor a satisfactory answer.
So I will describe here my problem and how I got there.
It is possible that my manipulations were not necessarily judicious...
I had only one drive in my ReadyNas duo, a 2TB drive.
I then took advantage of a good promotion to buy an additional 4TB drive, which I added to bay 2.
I let the synchronization do so that the data present in Raid 1 in my 2TB disk is copied to my new 4TB disk. Of course only 2TB of my new drive was usable.
By the way, I'm on the latest firmware.
Once the 2 were mirrored, I got a message saying that the state of my 4TB disk 2 had deteriorated.
I worried a little about it, doing a rebalance, then a disk test, but nothing changed.
No big deal since finally I decide to put the 2 disks in JBOD, to take advantage of the 6TB for my backups
(The more valuable items being doubled elsewhere).
So I removed the 2 disks, put my 4TB, and only it, on bay 1: I "Destroyed" it (DESTROY) then switched to JBOD.
He was then a virgin.
I put the 2TB disk containing my data (which was previously in bay 1) back into bay 2.
I then saw clearly, via the Netgear administration interface, my 2 disks:
The 4TB in Bay 1 with just one shared folder (Home Folder)
The 2TB contained 4 folders (Documents, Pictures, Music and Videos)
I wanted to move these 4 folders to the 4TB disk, but it was not possible directly.
Nor could I copy/paste the 4 folders (which seem protected).
I then created 4 new folders in the 4TB: (Documents2, Pictures2, Music2 and Videos2)
Then you got it: I copied the items from these folders from one to the other:
From the Documents folder (2TB disk) --> Documents2 folder (4TB disk)
From the Pictures folder (2TB disk) --> Pictures2 folder (4TB disk)
From the Music folder (2TB disk) --> Music2 folder (4TB disk)
From the Videos folder (2TB disk) --> Videos folder (4TB disk)
Once the copy was finished, I "destroyed" (DESTROY) the 2TB disk then passed it to JBOD as well.
Everything was ok.
I had about 6TB available on the 2 disks added together, and my data (about 1.56TB was on the 4TB disk). In addition, shared folders were also visible from Windows (latest version). And the condition was good, so all good.
But there I made a mistake (the best is the enemy of the good...): I wanted to modify the name of the shared folders by removing the "2":
So I wanted to rename them. But for these folders the "Rename" option was not available.
So I went through "properties" and changed the Name:
Ex "Documents2" --> "Documents"
And there by clicking on "Apply", after a few seconds I had an error which was displayed.
I don't know what she was saying exactly, but basically it created a problem.
I clicked "Ignore"... And the name was changed anyway.
So I repeated the manipulation for the 3 other paratge folders.
Oddly, even after these name changes, and although the changes did appear on the NetGear Administrator interface, the old names were still displayed via Windows Explorer.
I thought of a synchro pb and I restarted the NAS.
Issue: Share folders are now invisible on the NetGear Administrator interface!
And on windows, the old ones are still displayed, but impossible to enter these folders!
What reassures me is that my data appears as present in the "System" tab.
However, I no longer see them and can no longer access them!
Can you tell me how to correct this problem and access my shared folder data again?
There must be something to fix in the share because of this file name change that went wrong...
Thank you in advance for your answers.
Have a good day,
TylerJM
PS / I did a disk test and a rebalancing, but that obviously didn't help

You must have an OS-6 NAS then, not a Duo (which would either run 4.1.x firmware or 5.3.x firmware).
Can you double-check the model number?
Also, it would be helpful to know what firmware you are running.
- TylerMJAspirantHello,
Thank you for your answer.
My firmware : 6.10.7
Serial number : 3ER134EX010B5
Thank you for your help

You can see the NAS model on the first page of the Admin Web UI. Likely something like
- ReadyNAS 102
- ReadyNAS 202
- ReadyNAS 212
- ReadyNAS 312
- ReadyNAS 422
It would also be a good idea for you to download the full log zip file from the logs page of the web ui. That will likely have the clues needed to figure out what happened. The logs do roll over from time to time, so it is best to get them early.
