104 to 214
is it possible to take disks from a 104 and put them in a 214 without data loss ?

Yes.
1. Put a scratch disk (must not be from your array) in the 214.
2. Update the 214 to at least as new firmware as what the 104 was running.
3. Verify the firmware update was successful.4. Power down the NAS units.
5. Remove the scratch disk.
6. Move your disks across (keeping the order the same).
7. Power on the 214.

Even though the RN314 uses an x86 processor, it is supposed to be the same.
I'd go with the RN314 if the price difference is small. Lifetime software chat support vs 90 days with the ARM products. Though check the warranty registration posts - you do need to be careful about the reseller you use. The lifetime CHAT support is only for brand new and sealed products purchased from authorized resellers.
