4TB hard disks
It is early days yet but 4TB disks are starting to trickle on to the market. I am aware so far of two different makes being launched they being Seagate and Hitachi. Hitachi at least have now made a kit available for an 'internal' 3.5" 4TB drive.
While NetGear and also unlikely any ReadyNAS users have yet had a chance to test these, I was wondering if the Jedi or anyone else could comment as to whether in generic terms a ReadyNAS Pro running firmware 4.2.19 would in theory be able to support and use a set of 4TB drives? Please note I am not asking if the Seagate or Hitachi is supported I am asking if any hypothetical 4TB drive would work or are drive capacities now bigger than the ReadyNAS can cope with?
In my own case I currently have officially supported 2TB Hitachi drives but they are getting full, I could obviously go to 3TB drives but my thought was to go straight to 4TB drives in a little while.

- Marto731AspirantTo Xamphear,
I would echo previous speakers. In going from ( 4 x 2 Tera ) to ( 4 x 4 Tera ),
I would prefer that you copy data to USB HDD's or another source.
Insert 4x 4Tera together, Factory reset, and build Volume.
Rgds Marto - What would happen if I only added 2 4TB drives with 2 x 2TB drives in my NVX pioneer? would that work? or do I need to replace them all?

If you are running single redundancy XRAID, then installing 2 larger drives will work. If you are running 2 TB drives today, you'd see a volume increase of 2 TB.enkrypt3d wrote: What would happen if I only added 2 4TB drives with 2 x 2TB drives in my NVX pioneer? would that work? or do I need to replace them all?
It is important that you upgrade your firmware to 4.2.23 first. Also, there are some expansion limits - your NAS will not expand more than 8 TiB from the initial volume size (at install or last factory reset), and it will not expand beyond 16 TiB total. As always, you should have a current backup of your NAS data before you begin.
Since there are no 4 TB drives on the HCL for the NVX, Netgear support won't help you if you run into issues. - ChanymanAspirantHiya, I am new around here.
I have had a ReadyNas Duo V2 for quite a while running Transmisison and Flexget. Recently it has filled up so I decided to purchase some Seagate ST4000VN000 3726 GB to replace my Seagate ST2000DM001 1863 GB . At this stage it looks like they have been detected and its running a Sync operation to my first 4TB drive, I will let you guys know if I run into any issues. I am running RAIDiator 5.3.8 .
At this stage I would say for the ReadyNas Duo V2 the Seagate ST4000VN000's are a go! - I have 3 x 4TB drives running on the latest firmware and its running great. One thing that I did though was move the data off my old 4 x 2TB drives and popped these new drives in and made a new volume.
Seagate ST4000DM000. I might get a 4th one but I think this is enough space to last me forever! - blaizeAspirantHi I have a Readynas NV+ v2 running 5.3.7 and have 4 x 2tb drives running out of space, does anyone know if the Seagate 4TB drives will work to expand the volume?
Thanks,
Tony - I don't see why not........
I don't even think it was needed to copy everything off and do a factory reset b/c even with 4 x 4TB drives you'd only get ~12TB usable space anyways (nowhere near 16TB... I have 3 x 4TB now and just bought a 4th so we'll see how much usable space I'll have. So far my ST4000DM000's have been great on my NVX Pioneer Edition. - StorMan1AspirantHello,
Newbie here to the forum although have some IT skills :) Have a RNDu6000 or a Ultra 6 i think and was looking on the HCL list and notice that under the legacy section they only support the Hitachi 7k4000 drives. Can anyone in here confirm if the Seagate 4tb drives Seagate ST4000VN000 NAS HD 4TB 3.5 SATAII 64MB would be compatible. I have upgraded the raidar app to 4.3.8 if that helps. I currently have just one seagate 2tb drive in the machine as a test and it is working fine.
Any help would be appreciated. - dsm1212ApprenticeI'm using 3 seagate 4tb drives with no issue (and 1 hitachi). The seagates are not supported, but I've had no problem. Your mileage may vary.
Takes forever to add a drive this size so put in as many at once as you can.
steve - StorMan1AspirantAwesome - Thanks so much.... off to buy some drives heheheh
