APC Back-UPS RS 550GI

Reporting back the results of the following model : APC Back-UPS RS 550GI (region = UK)
Originally the setting within Frontview was set to "Auto" - Had to fix the percentage to get it to shutdown properly.

Whats the criteria for the ReadyNAS to shut itself down - Is it based on a percentage figure or set amount left on the UPS?
Reason for asking is because, when set to "Auto" it drained to 19% before I intervened & set the Frontview setting to shutdown at 10%.
The NVX then successfully shutdown when it hit 10%.

A switch was also attached but here's the result.
Tue Mar 9 17:47:33 WET 2010 UPS is shutting down system.
Tue Mar 9 17:47:31 WET 2010 UPS battery is low; system will shutdown soon.
Tue Mar 9 17:45:47 WET 2010 UPS is on battery power.

  • I tried this again, taking the sensible approach this time & attached the NVX to the mains & kept a non critical load on the UPS & let the NVX monitor the UPS.

Select shutdown on battery low threshold : "Auto"
Successfully shutdown when it got to 9%,
So I reckon this answers my query when alerts will come, it was waiting the "critical alert" signal from the UPS, but It get's pretty close to depletion for my liking, so I'll stick with manually setting the percentage as it's not critical if the NVX goes off-line early.

Final set of notifications from the Frontview log.

  • Just want to share that the APC Back-UPS RS 550GI (UK) works well with my ReadyNAS 2100. Automatic shutdown completed as required when battery power threshold of 90% was reached.

    Another one for the HCL?
  • reporting back since my original post- over the last month or so, I've had a couple of power interuptions from the mains supply & the UPS has handled each event perfectly. :D
Under each occasion it kept power supplied to my unit & when one outage was extended, it shut down at the requested %
  • Another report:
Readynas pro works fine with this UPS, didn't let it to power drain the UPS completely so I don't know if it shuts down automatically but it reports the same amount of time left as the LCD on the UPS itself so I guess it would work fine in such a scenario as well.
  • Frontview health panel shows: "UPS 1 Error, Battery charge: 0%, 0 minutes Out of Spec"
If I try to change the threshold it gives me UPS communication error.
The UPS is fully charged and connected to NAS. Doesn't help if I change to another USB port.
    Any ideas?
  • are you talking about THIS model ?
http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BR550GI or the RS 550GI is another one

    thanks
  • Yeah, I have BR 550GI, but ReadyNAS recognizes it as RS 550GI
