Clicking or ticking sound from disks every minute!
Why does the brand new disks from Seagate make a clicking or ticking sound once per minute? I have two ReadyNAS NV+ v2 units. Each equipped with four Seagate ST3000DM001-9YN166 drives. The disks are brand new and found in the official compatible disks list. Now the disks are making a clicking or ticking sound very often, at least one or two times per minute. And the unit is not doing anything.
I have uploaded a short video taken with my iPhone that captured the sound:

These units has costed a lot of money to buy and equip with disks and license for replicate etc. Looking at the result I should have bought something better. These units has caused me nothing else than problems so far!

- gibxxiGuideI have one of these drives in my PC's removable drive caddy, and i've noticed an audiable "clicking" noise from time to time too. I believe this is the heads on the disk "parking" themselves and then "unparking themselves" when the drive is accessed. It sounds unnervingly like the sound a drive makes once it's dying, i know. But check the SMART data for the drives in frontview and if there is nothing worrying there, just learn to ignore it as I have had to train my mind to do.
- HERBIEOAspirantWhat firmware are you running on these drives ? The latest firmware for that drive is CC4H http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/223651en
The new firmware download, version CC4H, is recommended to enhance the performance and/or reliability of the drive. Previous versions of firmware with these models and part numbers are CC46, CC47, CC49, CC4C, or CC4G. The upgrade is a free download available here and we are told that this helps with the chirping noises that some users are complaining about. - spinaltap1AspirantIn my Duo v1 I have two Seagate ST3500410AS 500Gb drives that I have been using for over three years - and these exhibit the same noise that you have been experiencing.
Oddly, I have placed these same drives in my new NV+v2 and there is no such noise at all. - linusdunkersAspirantProblem more or less solved!
I put some effort to update the firmware for all 10 disks I have (2 in stationary computer and 4 in each NAS) and now the clicking or ticking sound has gone away more or less! Really recommend everyone to update firmware on this disk to CC4H! - PapaBear1ApprenticeSome makes and models of disks are more prone to this than others. The type of enclosure may have an effect on how much sound gets out as well. If you had not heard the noise when the drives are new and then suddenly start hearing it, that would be worrisome. If they have clicked like that from day one and it doesn't get any worse, then I would accept it as normal.

Thanks HERBIEO. Applied the CC4H firmware and it's not only eliminated the noise, but also radically improved the performance. I should of checked Seagate's site beforehand, I honestly don't know why I chose not to. Hey, ho. :)
