I ran a memory test and it didn't report any errors. But something is wrong with the ReadyNAS itself -- I took out all 4 hard drives and put a different one in and did a factory default and continued to get this issue.
Seems like Netgear's quality control is lacking since they shipped out a device which immediately upon purchase couldn't be trusted to do its primary function of reading the data that is stored on it. Netgear has issued an RMA but they've informed me the replacement will most likely be refurbished. Which is not surprising for a warranty replacement -- but it's not like I started with a working device that died after some period of use. When the manufacturer made the mistake of shipping a brand new item with a defect that compromises the purpose of the entire device, they should make an effort to ensure their new customer is satisfied with their purchase.
My first 4 weeks of ownership have not been a pleasant experience, and I will never be running the brand new working unit that Netgear's quality control should have ensured I got in the first place? No thanks, if that is how it is going to be then this was my first and final ReadyNAS purchase.
edit: After following up with them a couple times, Netgear's customer care has offered to correct this issue by replacing with a new ReadyNAS and waiving the fees for an expedited replacement.
