D-LINK DIR-655
I have recently purchased a readNAS ultra 4 and set it up on the network... At first all seemed to be well, however I have not been able to get time machine backups to work well. When I first activated time machine via the checkbox in the readNAS website control page, I was able to connect with my mac (running os 10.6.8). However, the connection is lost before the backup can complete... This happens both through wireless and ethernet connections to the router. Maybe it's worth noting that I can connect to the afp shares without issues...
I directly connected to the readNAS via ethernet and everything works flawlessly so I am assuming that this means that there is an issue with the router... I haven't been able to see anyone else posting with this problem so I am wondering if anyone has had issues with the d-link dir-655 ?? I hope this doesn't mean I have to go buy a new router to use time machine!
thanks for anyone's comments!

- dbott67GuideI can't comment about the Mac OSX/AFP/Time-machine part of the equation, but my dad has a DIR-655 with his ReadyNAS and Windows XP and 7 computers and everything works fine. Personally, I've got a D-Link DGL-4500 (which is pretty similar to the 655) and I've never had an issue connecting to my Pro or NVX. Of course, I'm not using a Mac so it may be something to do with AFP.
- gilesrulzAspirantI don't have a full answer for you, but I have a DIR-825 and have the same problem.
At this point I have it pretty much narrowed down to a Bonjour problem, because when I mount the ReadyNAS share with command+k it will perform a time machine back-up as requested, but if that share is not mounted in that fashion, bonjour will fail to find it. - PapaBear1ApprenticeIf it works flawlessly with a direct connection, then that is a good indicator that there is something in the network path that is not compatible. I had a similar problem with a D-Link DGS-2205 switch that was not compatible with my NVX during normal file transfers from the NVX to the PC. Transfers from the PC to the NVX were fine. I could write the files just fine, just couldn't read them!
I replace the switch with a Netgear GS-108 and all was good. If you can find a switch that you know is good, connect it to your router and then your Mac and the Ultra to the switch. That way the router is not in the path during backups. (Switches are also generally cheaper than routers.) - ChabbaAspirantIm using a D-link DIR-655 and everything works ok however im not using MAC i have 3 computer connected one with Vista and two with windows 7.
have not used time machine. - markwollGuideMy 655 has worked with everything I have thrown at it so far.
Regularly 19 devices wired and wireless + 2 or 3 random smartphones and work notebooks
PC's ( xp to win 7 ), squeezeboxes, printers, NV+, cameras, tv's, stereo receivers, blu-ray, Wii
A very solid box.
I use a MacBook Pro but do not use time machine.
The firmware version for the 655 I have is 1.34na from last year, the earlier versions were a bit flakey.
mark - trnebAspirantThanks for the comments!
So it turns out that I have a DIR-655 Rev B ... So the hardware must be slightly different. It turns out that I didn't have the latest firmware after all. While I was pushing the update button in the router interface and it was telling me that I had the latest update, it was wrong. I manually updated to 2.03NA, however I am still having the same issue.
gilesrulz, I think you are on to something since if I connect to the NAS with the command+k I can access my afp shares with no issues even though they don't show up auto-magically with Bonjour. How do you manually connect to the time-machine share, or a shared printer for that matter? - trnebAspirantSo update ... It seems it was a bonjour issue ... I found this thread: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?action=printpage;topic=21069.0
To save reading ... if you go to 'advanced->advanced network' and then check the box for 'Enable Multicast Streams' everything seems to start working! I had to disable and then re-enable time machine on the readyNAS and now it shows up and so far I have not lost the connection! I can also see my afp shares along with my shared printer!
thanks for the pointers...
