Dead ReadyNAS Duo v2?

I bought a ReadyNAS duo (v2, stock fw4.1.6) about two years ago. My first unit died on me on first setup. I remember trying all sorts of documented restore procedures with no luck and ended up receiving a replacement unit. This new unit since became a problem child, requiring random firmware recoveries and frequently getting stuck with both drive LED blinking (a restart would eventually make it work, showing a very inconsistent operation). It is also very noisy (loud fan + two Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS) so I ended up using it only occasionally when needed to "safely" store family photos and videos (RAID1 the original reason for this purchase). Still I put up with its odd temper and kept it (The market alternatives were either too expensive or not entirely trustworthy).

This summer I turned it on but it failed to boot with led pattern “Bad contents on root partition of disks”. I tried to recover it but ended up with a bricked unit. The fan starts to spin hard as usual but no LED lights on.
Does this sound like a broken PSU (assumed the Duo’s PSU was internal and it looks fine)?
Any recommendations you may have are welcome, except for the common: get a new stock unit and restore your data from backup… I got a RAID NAS for the purpose of not bothering with backups (I bad I guess). The Mrs. will love to hear that I just messed up our photos again (Jesus!). Back to sleeping on the couch for me.

    “Bad contents on root partition of disks” suggests a problem that would require remote access from support to fix. What did you do to try to recover the system?

    You have a Duo v1 hardware revision 2. Do note that the Duo comes with a 3 year warranty.

    I did try to USB flash. But it didn't help. Then on a later day I did a TFTP recovery: I saw the tftp geting files but I ended with a dead NAS.
    About the 3yrs, that is interesting information. I assumed that here in Europe there were only 2 yr warranty.
    Any hints will be welcome.

    TFTP boot recovery is a dangerous procedure and unreliable and boot recovery was not the solution to your problem. Never do a TFTP boot recovery unless recommended to by support.

    Contact support and post your case/RMA number.
  • Thanks I have opened a request with Tech Support. I had no idea that TFTP boot was that dangerous, I consider it the sure last resort for networkable equipment (modems, routers, printers, etc.). I guess I will be more carefull in the future.

    Boot Recovery replaces the OS on the flash. Most of the time it's used when it's completely unnecessary such as this case.

    TFTP Boot Recovery has been quite unreliable of late.
  • Tech Support will start RMA (it was fast and simple too). So far so good but still waiting for courirer to pickup my broken unit.
  • So I got my replacement unit today.
    Inserted the disks (might as well do it all at once than having to sync later).
    ReadyNas is now up and running.
    Could not be happier.
