Duo - Mis-Matched HDD Size Compatability
Dear All,
I have an RND2100, with the two 1Tb HDDs in it. I have owned it for about 3 years now and I am getting the dreaded warning about an imminently failing HDD.
Having checked the HCL, I have found that the 2Tb drives are cheaper than the 1Tb drives. Can I replace the failed disk with a 2Tb drive, then when the second drive inevitably fails in a few months, I will do the same. I understand that the RND will be limited to the smallest drive during the interim phase. Is this the only restriction?
RND2100, RAID1.
Thanks Ed.

However, just because one drive is failing does not mean the failure of the second is imminent. Also keep in mind that during the resync process there is a lot of strain on the drives, so if the second drive is weak, that is when it could fail. Of course a second drive failure occurring during the resync would most likely cause data loss. For that reason if you are not currently maintaining a backup (recommended) then it is a good idea to create one, if you have one, make sure it is current.
