EDA50 SATA version
I am considering purchasing an EDA500 to expand my 8 bay unit. What version of SATA does the EDA500 support? Is the esata access to the EDA500 consideraby slower than just getting another 8 bay unit and using DFS?

Regrettably the hardware manual doesn't give the SATA version. I've seen some reseller sites that say it is SATA-300 - for instance here: https://www.cdw.com/shop/products/NETGEAR-ReadyNAS-5-Bay-NAS-Diskless-w-Exp-Chassis-RN300-500-EDA500-100NAS/2977645.aspx
That translates to 300 MB/s throughput (raw speed is 3 gbps, but the bus uses 8b/10b encoding - that gives you a 2.4 gbps max throughput).

Getting a second 8-bay unit would give better performance.

What is the internal bus speed versus the esata bus speed? It seems like it is a $125 invesment vs $1,500

There is no processor or hardware RAID, all the I/O is done directly by the main NAS. So the internal bus speed of the EDA isn't relevant.
If you meant the SATA speed of the RN52x or RN62x - I think the relevant factor there would be the network performance. If you are running 10 gigabit, then you should see better performance from a second NAS. I don't think you'll see much difference on gigabit on sequential files access, but you might on random I/O loads.

True enough.

are there plans for a faster extension chassis like the ED500?

I've been pushing Netgear Management for an EDA700 model , that would offer 7 bays - match the size/color of the RN628/528 & would be a cheaper solution then buying an 8 bay NAS unit.. if you just needed more physical disks (or had older HDD lying around you wanted to use.. -vs- buying new 10TB drives) - that whole conversation didn't go over very well ... & I got the impression even the EDA500 would eventually be discontinued ( newer NAS models only support 1 single EDA500 - older models supported several)
