Encryption, backup and the RN314
I am considering buying an RN314 but am curious about the encryption feature. As I understand it the encryption is per volume. Is it possible to create more than one volume? If so are their any implications (like X-RAID2 can't maximize available space with mixed sized drives)? I ask because I only have a small amount of sensitive data and don't want the performance hit of having all of my data encrypted.
Is it possible to backup (via USB) the encrypted volume? Is the data at the target encrypted, or is it in the clear on the backup drive?
Thanks.

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserEncryption is set up per volume when using flexraid. Network and local access to the encrypted volume is in the clear (which is generally the case with encrypted disks).
If you are using windows, you might consider a bitlocker-encrypted vhd (virtual disk) that is hosted on the NAS. There are some guides on how to do this if you google. Then encryption/decryption would be done on the client, and the NAS itself would have no ability to decrypt. (I haven't tried the guides myself, but I believe that they work). - mr_celloAspirantThanks StephenB. Is the bit locker SW you refer to the built in stuff in windows?
Presumably from a NAS backup perspective the VHD is simply another file? - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
