Ethernet 1 connecting at 100Mbit only.

I had this problem and it was the cable; 1 GB is much fussier about cables than 100 MB. Though you say swapping cables was one of your first moves, be sure you're not swapping a bad cable for a bad cable, and that you're using a cable you know works at 1 GB.
