Fan speed control
Apologies if this has been requested before.
Living in a warmer climate (Singapore) ad having just setup my RN314 with a single 500GB drive for testing. I can already see CPU temps hitting 55c+ and HDD temps 40+.
The system fan is spinning @ <800RPM so it would be great if there was even a simple setting which allowed users maybe 5 levels of default cooling/noise (silent/quiet/normal/med/high, with system controlled ramp up from there.
This is basically just setting a voltage that the fan will run at by default with the temps then triggering gradual increases in voltage.
Thanks.

I'm on 6.2.2.
I'll see what the temps look like when all the drives are added, though i'm not super keen having HDDs going above 40c- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired40c is well below the safe maximum level. It is fine for temps to go higher than that.

If you look at figure 5 here, http://static.googleusercontent.com/media/research.google.com/en/us/archive/disk_failures.pdf there is an increased failure rate for drives over 40C (after 3 years).mdgm wrote: 40c is well below the safe maximum level. It is fine for temps to go higher than that.
The study is dated, but I think it is a reasonable concern. There are lots of people over the years who have requested some choices for fan speed, and since the safe operating range is fairly broad it seems to me it would be a good thing for Netgear to do. mdgm wrote: The fans will spin up when needed. OK so the unit is now fully populated, with drives under zero load i.e. the unit is just running and I haven't configured any volumes.
At no point have I seen the fan increase over 800rpm and the temps continued to rise.
Drive 4 is a WD Se unit and I have to say that 48c is approaching concerning levels when the specs of the drive state 55c max operating temp.
Could the team please look into a way of providing an official way to have at least some control over the lowest fan speed?
Fan - 750RPM
CPU - 53
system - 39
Disk 1 - 43
Disk 2 - 41
Disk 3 - 45
Disk 4 - 48
