Feedback on ReadyNAS Pro 6 problem
i have a 6 month old ReadyNAS Pro 6, in addition to a ReadyNAS Pro Biz and ReadyNAS NV+ which are much older.
they have all worked flawlessly throughout their lives, with a few software issues here and there.
now the newest, the 6 month old Pro 6 has a noisy chassis fan (the large one on the back of the unit). sounds like a bearing going out.
the on line support people said no trouble, it is a field replaceable part, and just call the 800 netgear number and they will fix you up with a replacement fan; mention the support number etc.
except when i did that they told me it is not field replaceable, and that i have to send the entire chassis in, at a shipping cost of $50.
this makes no sense. the rest of the unit is fine, no other issues except the noise which was confirmed by my opening up the box and pulling the connector (and the bearing noise goes away).
instead they want me to send my unit back, where they presumably have to 'recondition' it to be able to send to someone else, IN ADDITION TO the shipping charges. all for a $4 fan?
is there any way i can just get a replacement fan? if not, can someone tell me the specs on the fan (CFM/current/etc.)
thanks,
mark

- PapaBear1ApprenticeI think that over time their policy has shifted. I know that when the NV+ was the active unit, you could purchase the fan, the PSU and spare drive trays, all listed at one time on the ReadyNAS store site as well as others. The trays are still available as is the NV+ fan but not the PSU. As more modern units have been released, the spare parts have not been listed. That is a shame but it indicates to me that they may have had problems with people who do not know how to properly open the cases and replace these parts.
It is amazing these days how many people do not have the foggiest idea how to open the side panel on their desktop, much less build one from parts. I mention to someone rather that compromise between different models about what hardware they want, they simply build their own and they look at me with this funniest look as if they can't believe I said that. So, those of us who can do it, wind up being limited.
When the Pro was first released (not the Pro 6, the original of which you said you had one), the promo flyer list the spare parts, none of which are on the ReadyNAS store site. I would take the fan out, get the make and model and do an online search. You may find at least the specs if not the actual fan. - markg1Aspiranti had the fan out, but failed to get the info at the time because they told me they would simply send me a replacement!
guess ill have to do it again. but my experience with some prior fans is that they use proprietary part numbers, and you cant find the specs. hopefully that isnt the case here.
fyi i build all my own systems as well, except these where it is a business application and i cant afford to screw around with any failures; its worth it to me to have the exchange/warranty on the box if something does go wrong....except the fan of course.
and im still hoping that someone from netgear chimes in on this thread; they have always been helpful in the past with the sw issues i had, but this is my first hw issue on the 3 nas's over almost 5 years. - markg1AspirantFYI
the Pro Biz and the newer Pro 6 use what seem to be (by the part number) identical boards
the chassis is slightly different internally, with the cable routings a bit different, but very similar
the fan is a crown AGE12025B 12M .38A max 2200rpm, 80CFM - PapaBear1ApprenticeNewegg has three 120MM fans listed that are close. Two are 2200 RPM, one is a 3/4 wiring connection but the other is only two wire. There is also a 2100 RPM fan with a four wire molex connector. They have 16 120MM fans listed that are 2000 RPM but I did not look at them. This one seems to be the closest (and the least expensive). For $14 it may be worth the shot if it will get the unit back in service while you work with Tech Support.
- markg1Aspirantstarted another on line support ticket.
again they told me they could mail me the fan, but to call the 800 number. i told them of my experience, and they said they would go ahead and mail me one, BUT they were out, and no date on getting more. they then speculated that they might never get more, hence the 800 number people telling me to send in the entire chassis.
fyi. - OOM-9NETGEAR ExpertI should have a spare fan that is from a Pro that should be good to use.
I will PM you to get contact details.
