hard disk marked as dead

I have a readynas ultra 4 which has been running for a couple of yearswith no issue, now yesterday i get a message saying one of the drives is dead, after running seatools over the drive it appears to be fine.

anyone care to comment.
seagate ST2000DL003 firmware CC32.

  • well after a low level format with seatools i reinstalled the drive and gave the ultra a reboot and it started the rebuild.
My concern is that will happen again.
I have noticed that other people have had the same issue and posted on here about these drives, why are they still on the hardware compatible list if there are issue with them.

I have checked kernel.log, It is the Seagate "FLUSH_CACHE_EXT" bug.
Seagate drive has this "FLUSH CACHE EXT" hang problem, the symptom would be exactly same as described:
Entire disk(all partitions) not responding, only power cycle can bring it back.
Seagate recently admitted this issue, they have a test firmware to address this hang issue.
