HCL WD Red Rotational Vibration Safeguard RVS Please confirm
Netgear's Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) states Western Digital Red HDD have Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS), but I cannot confirm this on any western digital data sheets.
I have also read Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward (RAFF) comments on other sites but I cannot confirm this on any WD data sheets either.
Where did this information come from?
If it cannot be confirmed then the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) needs to be changed to reflect this.

- atanas2AspirantHello,
Please check the following spec from WD
http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/S ... 701281.pdf - I have read that but that does not pertain to the WD RED HDD's but to the older RE 1TB drives.
Thanks for the try though. ;) - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI am not sure how this compares to RVS, however the 3D active balance is talked about on several web sites.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6157/west ... -premium/23D Active Balance : Vibration Reduction: WD claims that it is the first-to-market with 3D mechanical balancing technology for vibration reduction. This has obvious benefits in terms of decreasing noise and avoiding performance reduction. However, comparative measurements of this feature with the competition is outside the scope of this review. - 3D Active Balance Plus does read as a true improvement for vibration prevention, but that only helps to prevent its own vibration.
RVS is an active feedback system that can actively anticipate the surrounding vibration created by other sources by use of accelerometers attached to the HDD and then compensate for it by correcting the HDD head alignment.
It is like saying 3D Active Balance plus is similar to having you car wheels balanced, while RVS is more like Porsche's PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management). - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserUnderstood. I believe that the red drives do not have RVS, which is why they are positioned for smaller NAS. That is based on the information here: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/red ... 248-2.html
As mentioned, the Red drives boast power-on ratings of 8760 hours per year and a mean time between failure (MTBF) rating of 1 000 000 hours, on par with the pricier nearline drives out there. They don’t employ rotational vibration sensors, which is another reason they're being positioned as solutions in smaller storage systems, and not big racks loaded down with spinning disks that weather more severe vibrations.
So they seem to be designed to have low vibration, but do not use RVS. - Thanks Steven thats what I believe also,
but this link http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20641 states that it has RVS which is not the actual case.Vendor Model Capacity SATA Cache Rotational Vibration Safeguard Warranty(years)
and should be corrected as this is incorrect.
Western Digital WD RED WD30EFRX 3 TB 6Gb/s 64 MB Yes 3
Maybe another column with a title is needed such as vibration dampened, but in the mean time it should be changed from Yes to No. - Actually if a note is added to the drive that explains that it has reduced vibration and is suitable for 5 HDD NAS's then that may suffice.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserBoth Netgear and WD certified them for the Pro-6, so it is also ok for the 6 slot units. So the note shouldn't limit to 5.
- PapaBear1ApprenticeThe 5 bay note is WD's not Netgear's. Five bay offerings are more plentiful than 6, even 8 bay offerings are more plentiful than 6. From what I found only Netgear, Buffalo and QNAP offer 6 bay NAS units. The other 6 bay units are one row of 6 drives in a row, rather than the two rows of three found in Netgears offering.

Yes. Though in the same breath they say it is qualified with the Pro-6 (http://www.wd.com/en/products/products. ... ine_search)PapaBear wrote: ...The 5 bay note is WD's not Netgear's...
