ReadyNAS snapshots not rotating
Hi
ReadyNAS 102, v 6.2.4
Reading this, http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/23353/~/what-are-basic-snapshot-concepts-i-need-to-understand-before-operating-my, it suggests that when Snapshots of Shares are set to "Daily" for example, then will auto rotate / purge every 4 weeks.
However, all of my shares have 8 months of snapshots available, yet they are set to Daily snapshots. (8 months is the whole time it's been up).
e.g.: Shared Folder showing 35 snapshots / 8 months of protection: http://www.awesomescreenshot.com/image/413832/8530793b58be06ea1794211bf521aa5d
Same Shared Folder showing Daily snapshots: http://www.awesomescreenshot.com/image/413836/d9ea5c144f3fd95c121734b052617566
Interestingly, this topic http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/23166/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xNDM3MDgzMDM1L3NpZC9IWFNEQ3hybQ%3D%3D talks about the continuous protection option, but I don't have that in the dialog box.
As a result I'm having disk space issues - deleting files doesn't free space up as they are all in months worth of snapshots.
I could manually delete all of the old snapshots but that's a lot to delete and it'll just fill back up over time.
Any help re getting these snapshots rotating properly would be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Rob

- Hourly snapshots will be kept for a period of 48 hours.
Daily snapshots will be kept for a period of 4 weeks.
Weekly snapshots will be kept for a period of 8 weeks.
Monthly snapshots are retained forever.
So you have daily snapshots for past 4 weeks,
pruned to weekly for the previous 4,
pruned to monthly for the previous months.
Every month or so I go in manually and delete the oldest snapshot for the share. Generally I aim for 3 months back. - rjbathgateAspirantAh thanks, that makes sense...
So, my issue lies in that 2 months ago I deleted a lot of files off the ReadyNAS to free up some disk space, however that didn't actually free any space; because they are kept in the "forever" monthly snapshots.
Can I turn off the monthly forever at all?
Or do I have to manually delete them?
Or is there another option for me? Seems silly that this results in disk space not getting freed up.
Thanks - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou need to manually delete some of the oldest snapshots. I added that to my post, but I think your reply crossed...
I've suggested that having a an automatic retention threshold would be a good thing to add - perhaps you can put in your own feature request (in the feature request subforum or with netgear support). - rjbathgateAspirantYeah just saw you added that, thanks.
Do you know where on the drive the snapshots are stored? Then I could do it alot quicker and automatically via SSH.
Thanks - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserDo it from the admin web ui. Select the share, and then "recover". right-click on the snapshot(s) you want to delete, you should see a delete option.
I don't recommend trying to do it with ssh. - rjbathgateAspirantHi
Via the admin web gui is just time consuming and you can only do one at time it seems... and I have to remember!
I am a Linux Dev so very familiar with SSH and scripting; just don't know where they are physically stored :-) - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThere are two steps for doing it via SSH. First you have to delete the snapshot, then you have to delete it from the web management service's database.
First you would want to make sure that snapshot access is disabled in the UI.
