Together with the NAS they'll take me just over my £500 budget, but reviews of Caviar Green drives in general are very mixed ranging from 'they're rubbish' to 'love em'. If I drop to 2TB I can knock over £100 off the price but I might regret that 12 months down the line.
What do you think?
Make sure you do stick with what's in the HCL. It may look like we're not putting all that's available, but in fact if the drives are not in the list, it's usually because, we've found issues with that, and we're not going to recommend them. Also, you'll run into issues with Support as they'll generally refuse support if your problem ends up being drive-related. And if you do run into issues with a drive, you'll have either 3 or 5-yr warranty from the manufacturer, and because you are running RAID, a disk failure won't be catastrophic as if you only had a single disk.
The other thing I'm a bit nervous about is the firmware. How old is 4.2.16? If I have to upgrade the firmware is it difficult.
Not at all. It's as easy as a couple clicks and a reboot.
