Help ReadyNas Duo v1 - Unable to connect after power down

Hi,

Since powering down my Nas (2 seagate disks - dont think I set up RAID) for about a week, I have no longer been able to connect to it, or find iton my network usjng RAIDar.

I have checked network cables and everything seems ok. I tried a OS instal, as that has resolved similar issues I have had in the past. This didnt work. I then tried connecting by linking the Nas directly to my PC (after setting the pcs ip address and subnet to thatof the default Nas), but this failed to work. The Nas itself shows not unusual led blinking after appearing to boot normally. The ethernet plug socket suggests its connected as both lights are on solid. I have connected to my router, which shows the nas is not connected to the network/router.

I want to keep the data on the Nas so I havent tried a factory reset.

Yesterday I tried flashjng the OS using a usb with the latest firmware image (raidar 4.1.14). During this process the led showed an error code; 3 blinks, which I think is bad contents on root partition.I have since shuf down and restarted. Its now still not accessible, but not showing error codes.

Help, I dont know what else to try!

  • Just to follow up this thread. I tried a few free recovery options but they didn't work and although recovered data, due to the file storage or RAID, the movie and music files were segmented. In the end I had success with R Studio, a recommendation from Botts Thoughts. It's not a free service but it was user friendly and fast. Thanks again.

      Any good recommendations Stephen? Thanks

Not really.  Most will show you the files they can recover before you buy, so you can try a couple of different ones.

  • Hi Stephen, I finally tried connecting the drives to my windows pc using Linux reader. Disk 1 showed a number of partitions but no data :(. Disk 2 could not be read at all. I guess that's the end of the road?

You could possibly try recovery software.

  • Hi
No there.definitely was not a C and D volume visible , so must have been a RAID on it!

Will try reading the disk when I get a spare few.minutes. Cheers

Here are the led error codes.

LED blink behavior for 2 disk systems is three quick blinks of all disk LEDs and the backup LED, followed by an 1s delay, followed by a number of slow blinks. The number of slow blinks will be the error code.

    Current error codes:
    1 - Vendor mismatch
    2 - No disks detected
3 - Bad contents on root partition of disks
    4 - Flash error
    5 - Unsupported RAID configuration

XRAID is set up by default, so if you didn't set up RAID, that is what you have.

You can try using Linux Reader on disk 1 in a Windows PC ( http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/ ).  If you do, power down the NAS before removing the disk (and power it down before restarting).  Powering up the duo with disk 1 removed might be worth a try.

You could also contact support.netgear.com and arrange for per-incident support.  It's possible they can resolve the problem w/o a data recovery contract - which is quite expensive - but it is not certain.

Thanks for quick response, im sure I set up to remove any kind of raid (it wasa while ago now). Would booting with 1 disk still be worth trying if that wasthe case? I thought the duo was out of netgear support now? Will try anyway though. If i could retreive data, would a subsequent factory reset fix the (unknown) issue and restore functionality, or does it sound like a hardware issue?

      Thanks again

If you had removed raid, you would have a C and a D volume.  Do you recall if that is the case?

In any event, if you aren't using xraid then linux reader will not work.  You could boot with only one disk, but you might have some trouble later on mounting the volume in disk 1.

It is end-of-life, but I believe they will still provide paid per-incident support and data recovery.

I suspect a corrupted disk, though I don't know the cause.  So I suspect a factory reset would likely resolve it.
